SWIFT, one of the most core players in the global financial infrastructure, announced that it has launched a blockchain-based ledger system and has launched a pilot project with 17 global banks to enable round-the-clock cross-border payments through deposit of tokens. This development has attracted much attention because it shows that the traditional financial world is beginning to embrace blockchain technology more directly.
According to SWIFT, the pilot project aims to make cross-border payments faster and more efficient and operate around the clock. The system is built on SWIFT\'s own blockchain ledger and the goal is to allow banks to process international payments with deposit tokens, no longer limited by traditional working hours.
The 17 banks participating in the project are all heavyweight institutions in the global financial sector, including ANZ, BNP Paribas, BNY, Citi, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, Standard Chartered, UBS, UOB and Wells Fargo. The addition of these large banks shows that SWIFT\'s move is not only a technical experiment, but also a preparation for real financial application scenarios.
SWIFT said that the relevant infrastructure has been developed in the past nine months and has been continuously optimized based on feedback from international financial institutions since its announcement last year. The purpose of this process is to make blockchain technology compatible with existing banking systems, thereby reducing time consumption, costs and operational inefficiencies in international payments.
