FollowingOpenAI released the GPT-5.6 series of models after the U.S. government completed a security review of the model that had blocked its release. The Trump administration has asked federal agencies to conduct a potential security risk assessment of the model.
This news makes sense for businesses and individual users who buy AI services by token, as OpenAI is making the model\'s selling point with cost-effectiveness rather than raw intelligence. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told CNBC that the flagship version is 54% more efficient than competing products in agent coding tasks.
After a delayed release, GPT-5.6 came out in three different versions: Sol, Terra and Luna. Sol focuses on complex reasoning and deep coding tasks;Terra is best suited for daily routine tasks; and Luna is the most economical and ideal for high-volume tasks. The release was made available on Thursday, after some twists and turns in Washington. During an evaluation by the Ministry of Commerce\'s Artificial Intelligence Standards and Innovation Center, access to the model was limited to about 20 government-vetted partners, and OpenAI also sent technicians to answer questions from the agency. Altman said the company \"made a lot of changes\" to the system during the review, which he described as a \"collaborative back-and-forth communication.\" The process involved Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Finance Secretary Scott Bessant and National Network Director Sean Cairncross.
Why did the US government intervene in the release of GPT-5.6?
This is related to the powerful coding capabilities of certain AI models. OpenAI\'s GPT-5.6 and Anthropic\'s Mythos series are capable of discovering software vulnerabilities. This has rightly alarmed government officials, who fear that these advanced models could be used to attack financial institutions running on older AI models. The review goes beyond the voluntary review framework signed by President Trump on June 2. The framework requires companies to allow government agencies to conduct inspections before releasing powerful AI models. The obstacles OpenAI has to overcome are not much different from Anthropic\'s experience with the U.S. government. The Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models were initially suspended by the government due to safety concerns. But Fable 5 has been fully restored, while Mythos 5 is only open to a few U.S. organizations.
OpenAI launches new AI agents with new models
At the same time as the release of GPT-5.6, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, an AI agent built based on GPT-5.6 that can operate across applications and files after users connect. The agent can also compile documents, spreadsheets and presentations, which can be used on the web, mobile and desktop. It is an autonomous user and can run for hours with a single prompt. Comparisons with the Anthropic model have begun, with some arguing that Fable has raw intelligence, while GPT-5.6 is best suited for daily tasks. Dan Shipper, CEO of Every, posted on X: \"If you need to travel through galaxies, use Fable; if you need to travel around the city, use the best tool for work-use 5.6.\" The voluntary framework signed by President Trump is noteworthy because government actions will largely determine security restrictions.
