Giant whale deposited approximately US$450,000 in Hyperliquid and opened a short position of US$222,000 in Meme token CASHCAT
A crypto giant whale deposited approximately US$450,000 in Hyperliquid and used some of the funds to open a short position of approximately US$222,200 in Meme token CASHCAT, indicating its strong bearish belief in this small-market asset.
OnchainLens, the online tracking tool, flagged the transaction, noting that the wallet had shorted 1.11 million CASHCAT tokens on Hyperliquid\'s perpetual contract trading platform. The deposit size is about twice the size of the initial short position, leaving sufficient margin space for traders to later add positions or respond to adverse price fluctuations.
Why a $222,000 short Meme token order is eye-catching
It is uncommon to make six-digit directional short on a Meme token. Meme tokens are generally thinly liquid, which means positions of this size can quickly change the market sentiment of retail investors who are focused on flowing water in the chain.
This short position also brings two-way liquidation risk. If CASHCAT prices rise, the giant whale will face forced liquidation, which may trigger short squeeze. If the token falls, layers of selling pressure from other holders could accelerate the decline, similar to market dynamics that occurred earlier this year when a giant whale opened a short position of 40-times leveraged BTC of $31.08 million on Hyperliquid.
The roughly 2:1 ratio between approximately $450,000 in deposits and $222,000 in positions suggests that moderate leverage has been used. This means that traders are not maximizing their risk exposure, but leaving room for risk management. This structure points to a belief based trade rather than speculative short-term operations.
Watch what\'s next on Hyperliquid
Traders who are watching should pay attention to whether the wallet has added short positions or started to close out positions. Subsequent increases in deposits or positions will strengthen bearish judgments, while partial liquidations may signal profit-taking or a shift in opinion.
CASHCAT\'s price reaction within hours of the trade will indicate whether the market agrees with the whale\'s bearish view. If the price rises under short pressure, the probability of squeezing increases; if the price falls, the rationality of the position is confirmed.
The open interest in CASHCAT perpetual contracts is also worthy of attention. On platforms like Hyperliquid, which has attracted increasing institutional capital inflows, visible whale positions tend to attract follow-up trading in both long and short directions.
In addition, large leveraged positions on Hyperliquid have attracted widespread attention recently. A trader lost US$5.5 million on both short ETH and long BTC positions, highlighting the volatility risks inherent in large-scale directional trading on the platform.
