Cryptocurrency investor and commentator Pumpius points out link between BRICS cross-border payments initiative and XRP's role in new global payment system

Cryptocurrency investor and commentator Pumpius highlights the connection between recent BRICS initiatives on cross-border payments, central bank digital currencies, and financial reform, and the argument that XRP may play a role in a new global payment system." His posts point to developments involving India, BRICS and international payment infrastructure, and present these developments as evidence of trends that XRP holders have been following for years.

Pumpius wrote on Twitter: "They don't even hide it anymore." He then pointed to India's proposal to explore links between BRICS digital currencies through initiatives such as mBridge (now known as BRICS Bridge) and the BIS Project Nexus.

India promotes interoperability of central bank digital currencies

The Reserve Bank of India has explored strengthening interoperability among central bank digital currencies of BRICS member countries. The proposal focuses on connecting sovereign digital currencies to support cross-border trade and settlements.

India's digital rupee (e-rupee) is part of this effort. The broader goal is to create payment infrastructure to facilitate international transactions using digital versions of national currencies.

Pumpius linked this development to the XRP argument that has been circulating among cryptocurrency investors since 2018. He believes that the emergence of cross-border central bank digital currency infrastructure is similar to the payment architecture expected by XRP supporters.

However, the initiatives mentioned in the post are not part of a single system. mBridge remains a multi-central bank digital currency project led by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), involving participating central banks. It is not simply renamed BRICS Bridge. BRICS Bridge is a stand-alone concept linked to efforts within BRICS countries to improve cross-border payment connectivity.

Project Nexus has a broader scope. BIS developed Nexus as a framework to connect domestic instant payment systems in various countries. India's Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is one of the systems related to the initiative.

BRICS countries seek changes to global financial institutions

Pumpius also cited BRICS finance ministers 'calls for reform of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

Finance ministers and central bank governors of BRICS countries have called for urgent reform of the Bretton Woods institutions. Their position aims to increase the representation of emerging market economies by changing quotas and voting structures.

This impetus is part of a broader effort by BRICS countries to strengthen the role of emerging economies in global financial decision-making.

[TAG 28]Pumpius connects these developments to the establishment of payment infrastructure that reduces reliance on established systems. "The digital rupee, the cross-border central bank digital currency track, and a payment system built outside of SWIFT... this is exactly the movie XRP holders have watched repeatedly since 2018," he wrote.

XRP connectivity remains a separate issue

These developments are similar to several use cases promoted by XRP supporters over the years, particularly cross-border settlements, liquidity and interoperability between different currencies.

However, the systems described in these initiatives do not establish that BRICS countries or their member states are adopting XRP or XRP Ledger. Central bank digital currency projects typically use sovereign-issued digital currencies and employ licensing infrastructure specifically designed for the needs of central banks.

These developments support efforts to expand central bank digital currency interoperability and improve cross-border payment infrastructure. Claims that these initiatives represent the adoption of XRP are separate from these developments.
