Japan's Metaplanet increased its holdings by 1,000 bitcoins in the third quarter, becoming the world's second largest corporate bitcoin holder

Metaplanet, a company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, announced that it will increase its bitcoin holdings by 1,000 bitcoins during the third quarter of 2026. Through this increase in holdings, Metaplanet has established its position as the treasury manager of Bitcoin for the world's second-largest company.

Buying and selling strategy: Buy first and after sales to demonstrate liquidity

According to official documents released Monday, Metaplanet disclosed that it sold 10,000 bitcoins for approximately US$789.2 million. Shortly thereafter, the company bought back another 11,000 bitcoins for $948.7 million, with an average acquisition price of $86,246 per bitcoin during this period.

Company executives said the sell and repurchase operation was a carefully thought out move designed to demonstrate the company's liquidity capabilities to investors. "The transaction aims to strengthen market confidence in the company's credit credentials and broaden its future financing channels, including the issuance of corporate bonds and preferred shares, with the ultimate goal of increasing the amount of Bitcoin held by the group." Metaplanet stated in the document.

"Through actual transactions, we proved that the group was able to convert bitcoin into cash and held a cash balance that exceeded the total principal amount of its bonds, loans and other interest-bearing liabilities." CEO Simon Gerovich pointed out that Metaplanet's cash holdings from Bitcoin sales exceeded the company's total outstanding debt before repurchasing more bitcoins."

Mini Dictionary: About Metaplanet

Metaplan is a Japanese investment company known for its transformation from its original hotel and technology business to a focus on Bitcoin investments. It is often compared to Strategy, a major U.S. company, which has attracted much attention for holding the world's largest corporate Bitcoin treasury.

Market Impact and Company Status

The company's announcement comes as Bitcoin prices rebound, which has boosted the value of crypto assets on its balance sheet. Boosted by the news, Metaplanet shares rose on Monday. Although the share price has fallen year-to-date, the stock has gained over the past month.

Starting in 2024, Metaplanet has begun to shift its business model away from hospitality and technology to Bitcoin investments, trying to follow the lead of the U.S. listed Bitcoin Treasury. Recent transactions have brought Metaplanet's total Bitcoin holdings to 44,000, with a total valuation of approximately US$3.7 billion based on current market prices.

Executive Statement and Outlook

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich shared more insights about the transaction on social media, assuring investors that the group can quickly convert digital assets into cash and efficiently manage debt obligations.

Gerovich explained that the company successfully converted bitcoins into cash before buying more bitcoins than it originally sold, an amount that exceeded the level of all outstanding bond principal and interest-bearing liabilities.

Metaplane is seen as the Asian counterpart of major bitcoin holders in the West, further consolidating its new identity as a major institutional holder in the global digital asset landscape.
