Hyperliquid buys back its own tokens: From a single revenue source to a dual-engine drive
Hyperliquid has launched its token repurchase program. Since early October 2026, the agreement no longer relies solely on transaction fees to fund buybacks. Under the AQAv2 framework, approximately 90% of cost-adjusted earnings from USDC reserves flow into the same funds as the public market collects HYPE. The initial payment from this source was approximately 14.58 million USDC. For holders, this does not cause drastic fluctuations in prices overnight; what really changes is the underlying logic of the market's demand for tokens.
Currently, the price itself provides limited information. HYPE was trading at about $85.03, up about 1% from 24 hours ago, but down 5.6% in the past seven days (data as of Sunday morning, source: OKX Exchange and CoinPaprika). Current prices are about 13% below the all-time high of $97.93 set on September 23. With a market value of approximately US$18.9 billion, the token ranks 11th among the largest cryptocurrency assets.
Operating mechanism of the Hyperliquid Aid Fund
The Aid Fund is a government-owned treasury that uses exchange income to purchase HYPE in the market. It does not negotiate, vote, or wait for decisions: as income accumulates, the fund directly executes purchases. According to DefiLlama, 99% of fees on perpetual contracts and spot order books go into the fund (excluding certain builders and unit fees); other analyses put this at around 97%. This difference stems from different definitions of exclusions.
It is crucial to understand this: repurchase does not mean a commitment to price. It is a stable demand based on the size of revenue. If trading volume declines, repurchase efforts will also weaken. This was at the heart of the changes that took place in early October.
AQAv2: USDC reserve earnings as secondary source of funding
AQAv2 stands for Aligned Quote Asset v2. The mechanism behind it is simple and straightforward: Hyperliquid holds USDC reserves that generate interest. After deducting costs, about 90% of the proceeds go back to the aid fund and are used to buy back HYPE. Online verifiers approved the framework with a 69.08% vote in favor on June 12, 2026. Revenue began to accumulate from August 26, 2026. The first payment of approximately 14.58 million USDC was transferred to the fund in early October. crypto.news reported this, citing the project's own figures.
The rhythm here is not a statistical detail. Revenue is accumulated every 30 days or so and then automatically forwarded. As a result, people who follow inflows do not see daily trickles, but receive payments at longer intervals. A single payment does not explain trends.
Two stocks inflow, same destination: Since the implementation of AQAv2, transaction fees and USDC reserve gains have been jointly injected into the same fund.
HYPE prices are at US$85, below 13% of the September 23 all-time high
The past week has not been smooth for HYPE. The weekly high was $95.27 on October 5, and the weekly low was $82.67 on October 8 (from OKX's daily chart). The difference between the two points is about 13%, and current prices are closer to lows than highs. The all-time high of $97.93 occurred on September 23, less than three weeks ago.
This is what makes this case interesting: the agreement buys back its own tokens day after day, but the price still goes down. This does not mean that buybacks are not effective, but that they are just one force among many. On the other hand, there is selling pressure caused by unlocked positions, overall market conditions, and a crypto market environment with weak overall performance.
US$1.34 billion in negotiated revenue: What the data says
To understand scale, it's worth looking at the cumulative numbers. According to DefiLlama, Hyperliquid has charged approximately US$1.65 billion in fees since its launch; of which, as agreement revenue (that is, the portion included in the agreement and used for repurchase), analysis shows approximately US$1.34 billion. It was approximately US$71.4 million in the past 30 days and approximately US$14.2 million in the past 7 days.
If AQAv2's first payment of 14.58 million USDC is tied with it, the scale becomes tangible: this transfer is roughly equivalent to the average weekly revenue generated by the business. The second source of funding is by no means a footnote, but it cannot replace the core business. Its role is to broaden the foundation.
As far as the tokens themselves are concerned, the circulation volume is approximately 955.3 million HYPE, with a ceiling of 1 billion. No matter how much the fund repurchases, it will be deducted from the liquidity. The specific size of this position currently varies according to different analyses, so no single figure is given here: it is credible that the cumulative revenue of approximately US$1.34 billion marks the upper limit of possible inflows into repurchase.
Repurchase and destruction are two separate steps
Accuracy is important here because these terms are often confused in reports. Repurchase means that the fund buys tokens on the market. Destruction means that these tokens are permanently destroyed. The former temporarily removes supply from the trading market, while the latter permanently removes it from the total. Existing reports all confirm that buying behavior is taking place; there are different opinions on whether positions are subsequently destroyed or continued to be held. Therefore, the inflow of funds into the fund cannot be used as evidence that the corresponding number of HYPE has been destroyed.
For holders, this is a practical difference: retained positions can theoretically be re-entered into the market, while destroyed positions cannot. Therefore, anyone who includes buybacks in assessments should track these two links separately.
Why trading volume is still the weathervane
Both funds rely on business. Fees depend directly on transaction volume. Reserve yields depend on the size and interest rate level of USDC reserves, which in turn grow as users invest capital into exchanges. If the market cools, both cash flows will shrink, but at different times. Therefore, repo is not a bottom support for prices, it reflects exchange activity.
Anyone holding HYPE can calculate it yourself: the holding period, custody method and purchase method determine the after-tax outcome.
Buying HYPE from Germany: MiCA Licensing and Exchange Access
Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange for perpetual contracts (i.e. futures contracts with no expiration date). The exchange does not operate in the EU as a service provider licensed under MiCA regulations. This means two things to you: there is no German investor protection under regulated services, and there is no complaint receiving authority in disputes. As a result, people who want to hold HYPE in token form typically need to transit through a regulated trading platform that lists the token. Which providers hold European licenses and how the fees differ, please see our comparison of the best cryptocurrency exchanges.
If you want to trade in the infrastructure itself, you are in the realm of decentralized sustainable exchanges. These exchanges vary widely in fees, liquidity and enforcement rules; we provide an overview of a comparison of the best sustainable DEXs.
HYPE Custody: Own wallet vs exchange account
If HYPE is stored in an exchange account, the exchange holds the private key. You have claims on the company rather than directly accessing the coin. This is convenient and energy-saving, but it also concentrates risk, as shown by the freezing of withdrawals caused by exchange events in recent months. In your own wallet, the responsibility lies with you, including the management of recovery phrases and the obligation to back up offline and in two separate locations.
Key levels between $82.67 and $95.27
serve as an observation rather than a price target: On the downside, the weekly low of $82.67 marks the next point for buying in recent days, with the $80 integer mark below it. On the upside side, a weekly high of $95.27 first constituted resistance, followed by a historical high of $97.93 and an integer mark of $100. As long as prices fluctuate between $82.67 and $95.27, last week's pattern remains unchanged.
HYPE repurchase: Without trading volume, secondary source of funding will shrink
The news is structural, not dramatic: repurchase is now supported by two feet, not one. However, these feet can bear the weight only when transactions occur on the exchange and capital remains. This leads to three steps:
- Mark the next AQAv2 payment in the calendar. Revenue accumulates every approximately 30 days; the first payment is made in early October. If the second payment is significantly reduced, it indicates a contraction in reserves or a reduction in interest rates, rather than a one-time effect.
- Determine the purchase channel before purchasing. Because the agreement lacks a European license, the platform determines investor protection and costs; a comparison of the best cryptocurrency exchanges shows where HYPE can be traded under the MiCA license.
- Plan the leverage and holding period separately. Different rules apply to trading perpetual contracts and holding tokens in a portfolio; for an overview of the platform, see the Best Perpetual DEX Comparison, and tax records are processed by cryptocurrency tax tools.
