LayerZero launches Akita tool to address quantum problems in the encryption industry

LayerZero has launched a post-quantum cryptography tool called Akita, designed specifically for zero-knowledge systems. a16z crypto integrates Akita into its Jolt system, creating a new Lattice Jolt zkVM (zero-knowledge virtual machine). The technology has become a key means for cryptocurrencies to attract Wall Street institutions that value most privacy.

Although zero-knowledge systems still rely on cryptography to create and verify these proofs, existing cryptography systems may become fragile in the future due to powerful quantum computers. To this end, LayerZero built Akita based on lattice-based cryptography. This is a mathematical method for quantum security after the next generation. a16z takes the lead in deploying Akita

Interestingly, Akita's first major deployment has been achieved through its collaboration with a16z crypto. The venture capital firm has introduced Akita into its zero-knowledge virtual machine, Jolt, creating a new version-Lattice Jolt. Jolt is a system that uses zero-knowledge proofs to demonstrate the correctness of calculations. By integrating Akita, a16z adds an anti-quantum layer to the system, making the proof smaller and the verification process faster.

According to LayerZero, Akita can reduce the proof size to approximately 65 - 80 KB, while some existing post-quantum schemes typically have proof sizes above 200 KB. In addition, it can increase verification speed by 2 to 3 times and reduce memory usage by about half.

Although quantum threats still seem to be a future issue, the cryptocurrency industry has begun to prepare. This week, IonQ released a study that estimates that a future quantum computer with 20,000 qubits could theoretically crack the secp256k1 cryptography used by Bitcoin in less than 26 days. At the same time, Ethereum developers plan to implement a quantum-resistant basic layer in 2029, and Bitcoin developers are also exploring post-quantum upgrade solutions.

So projects like Akita are not so much about responding to imminent threats as about ensuring that the infrastructure of cryptocurrencies is ready before the threat actually arrives.
