Symbiosis cross-chain liquidity protocol recovers 15 bitcoins from Bitcoin Bridge vulnerability
Cross-chain liquidity protocol Symbiosis announced that it has recovered 15 bitcoins worth approximately US$1.1 million from the Bitcoin Bridge vulnerability attack it encountered on Friday. According to a post posted on platform X (formerly Twitter) under the agreement, Symbiosis said it had transferred the 15 bitcoins (BTC) into a multi-signature wallet controlled by the team and clarified that all fund routing is still operating normally.
This vulnerability affected Symbiosis's native Bitcoin bridge, which is still suspended. According to data disclosed by blockchain security company Blockaid on Friday, attackers used the protocol to mince 46.1 billion unendorsed tokens, but the actual net gain was only 4.3 wrapped bitcoins (WBTC), worth approximately $336,000. Currently, Symbiosis has not clearly stated the specific relationship between the recovered bitcoins and the $336,000 in proceeds attributed to the attackers.
In order to further recover losses, Symbiosis is now offering a 20% reward to anyone who provides information that can help asset recovery. The agreement had previously provided for paying attackers a 20%"white hat" bounty in exchange for funds returned, but the deadline expired on Sunday. In addition, the parties to the agreement said they would publish a compensation framework for affected liquidity providers. Although DeFiLlama data shows that the vulnerability caused approximately US$336,000 in losses, Symbiosis has not disclosed its final loss accounting results.
Bridging vulnerabilities continue to test decentralized finance (DeFi) security
Such incidents are not isolated. In June this year, Secret Network suffered an "infinite casting" vulnerability attack, resulting in agreement losses of approximately $4.6 million. In May, the Verus-Ethereum Bridge Channel was stolen in a fake cross-chain transfer attack with 5,402 Ethereum coins (ETH) worth approximately US$11.6 million at the time. After the parties provided a 25% white hat reward, the hackers returned 75% of the stolen funds the next day, but still retained approximately 1,350 ETH (worth approximately $2.8 million).
