Balancer moves towards formal liquidation: The former "blue chip" agreement for decentralized finance ended due to its inability to achieve financial sustainability.
As a former cornerstone "blue chip" agreement in the field of decentralized finance (DeFi), Balancer is moving towards a formal comprehensive liquidation stage. Previously, despite the team's efforts to recover from the disaster, it failed to make the agreement financially sustainable. A new governance proposal calls for a complete cessation of remaining operations and the direct allocation of at least $9 million from the DAO treasury to BAL token holders. This marks the effective end of the project, which once managed billions of dollars in liquidity.
Why Balancer chose to liquidate
The proposal written by Marcus Hardt and published at the Balancer Governance Forum points out that the agreement faces severe financial realities: its monthly revenue is about US$30,000, while monthly expenses are as high as about US$150,000. This consumption rate that exceeds its means has prevented the protocol from maintaining continuous operations during failed reorganization attempts after a catastrophic hacking attack in 2025.
Balancer confirmed the proposal on its official X account: "The proposal to liquidate Balancer and allocate treasury funds to BAL holders has taken effect at the forum and was drafted by Marcus Hardt. Discussions are open; Snapshot voting is expected from September 25 to 29."
The team made it clear that no immediate operational changes would be taken at this time: "Today it's business as usual: the funds pool and withdrawal functions are operating as usual. Any liquidation action will await the outcome of the vote."
Balancer
