Unconfirmed links are equally critical
The fact that has not yet been confirmed is equally important. On the main web, no public application demonstrates that AI agents can repeatedly pay for real services using tokens issued by ADA or Cardano. Therefore, this progress establishes technical compatibility rather than commercial adoption.
Imagine a scenario where an AI agent purchases a dataset
The agent requests data from an online service. The service provider responds to an HTTP 402 message that contains the price, accepted asset types, and payment address. The wallet or signature system checks whether the payment meets the restrictions set by the user or developer. The signed payment is then verified and submitted to the Cardano network. The data set is released after the service provider confirms the payment.
The agent does not necessarily have full control of the wallet. Applications can limit the amount they spend, the services they are allowed to use, and the types of assets they can send. This distinction is crucial because the goal of x402 is to automate single payments rather than give AI systems unlimited access to their funds.
What Cardano actually adds
x402 is an open payment standard built around HTTP 402, or "payment required" network response code. It allows a website or API to request payment during the same interaction as requesting a product. The current official x402 software development kit (SDK) lists support for the Cardano network in its TypeScript implementation. This provides JavaScript and TypeScript developers with a standard tool to prepare Cardano payments and connect them to x402-enabled services.
The current function matrix does not list support for Cardano in official Go or Python implementations. As a result, developers using these languages need additional components or do their own integration work. An independent project of the Cardano Foundation provides a Java-based mediation tool (Facilitator). It is related to the same payment standard, but is not the Java version of the official TypeScript package. These two distributions address different aspects of the integration problem and should not be considered the same product.
Who can move funds?
The mediation tool is located between the application requesting payment and the Cardano network. Its responsibility is to check signed transactions, verify whether they match payment requests, and submit them to the blockchain.
- User or developer: Set spending limits, select allowed assets, and decide which services the agent can use.
- Wallet: After checking that the transaction complies with the rules, approve and sign the exact transaction.
- Mediation tool:
Cardano 基金会的中介工具已在 preprod(Cardano 的公共测试网络)上完成了端到端交易。
- Cardano
Cardano now has the components needed to try this test. The next big announcement should not be that an AI agent can theoretically pay, but that an independent agent pays for something useful-and comes back to buy again.
