Avalanche

Avalanche

Ava Labs

Snowman

Avalanche has never focused its expansion story on rolling expansion. Instead, the team launches sovereign L1 chains that borrow verifier security from the main network but set their own fees, permissions, and virtual machine rules. The Etna upgrade, activated on December 16, 2024, will reduce the cost of running such chains by more than 99%, replacing the 2000 AVAX continuous pledge requirement with a fixed fee of approximately 1.33 AVAX per month per validator. Mainnetwork verifiers still need to pledge at least 2000 AVAX.

Comparison of the AVAX supply model and the Ethereum model

Both networks burn transaction fees, but they apply this mechanism differently.

Capped combustion-driven supply

AVAX has a hard cap of 720 million tokens, with about half released at launch, and the rest retained as pledge rewards to be paid in future years. All transaction fees on the main network are burned rather than paid to verifiers, while the newly issued AVAX is minted separately to fund pledge rewards.

Ethereum also burns a portion of fees under EIP-1559, but it has no fixed supply cap and its circulation is responsive to how much ETH is pledged.

Outstanding issues about verifier benefits

In a blog post in April 2026, the Avalanche Foundation itself argued that verifier economics needed a redesign. The article pointed out that verifiers profit almost entirely from token issuance, which will decrease as the network approaches the supply limit; in addition, because fees are burned rather than shared with verifiers, verifiers currently have no direct financial interest in C-Chain activities. The article proposes to explore ways to route part of transaction fee revenue to verifiers. This is an unresolved design issue, not an established feature.

Avalanche's current positioning

Recent developments suggest that its promotional focus is shifting to the regulated financial sector rather than purely retail DeFi.

Institutional Trading and Spot ETF

Reported transactions include: Japan's Progmat moved more than US$2 billion in tokenized securities to Avalanche;Apollo tokenized US$50 million in credit funds; and South Korea's Hanwha Group selected Avalanche to settle tokenized securities.

On January 26, 2026, VanEck launched the first AVAX spot ETF listed in the United States, which is traded on Nasdaq under the VAVX symbol and includes pledge rewards for holders. According to Bitget, its first day was flat, with trading volume on the first day of business of approximately US$334,000 and no net inflow on the opening day. Two competitors followed suit: Grayscale's Avalanche Staking ETF (GAVA) was launched in March, and Bitwise's Avalanche ETF (BAVA) was launched on the New York Stock Exchange in April. By mid-2026, the total number of AVAX products listed in the United States will reach three.

Helicon upgrade

Avalanche's Helicon upgrade will be available on the main network on September 22, 2026, after being tested on the Fuji Test Network since July 28. It integrates six community proposals: shortening the minimum verifier pledge time from 14 days to 48 hours, adding verifier pledges for automatic renewal, increasing verifier online requirements from 80% to 90%, and adding continuous execution to C-Chain, which separates block acceptance from block execution to increase throughput.

Conclusion

Avalanche positioned itself as a competitor to Ethereum by matching its developer tools and simultaneously replacing its consensus mechanism, single-chain model, and verifier penalties with Snowman consensus, three-chain networks that support independent L1, and a penality-free design. This architecture now supports institutional tokenized trading and spot ETFs, although the Avalanche Foundation's own researchers believe its verifier economics needs further improvement.
