Security researchers are investigating possible wallet tampering, but the specific reasons remain unclear. Ledger has launched an investigation into alleged cryptocurrency theft involving customers who purchased hardware wallets from Southeast Asian distributor CryptoBilis. The survey was based on reports of more than $86 million in potential losses on multiple blockchain networks.

Ledger calls for a suspension of sales and shipments
On October 9, the company requested a temporary suspension of sales and shipments of equipment so that the incident can be investigated. However, Ledger has not yet confirmed the amount of the reported loss or its root cause.
Investigation led to the suspension of sales of CryptoBilis
Ledger identified CryptoBilis as a dealer related to customer complaints in Southeast Asia. The company operates as an authorized Ledger dealer in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. As a result, the hardware wallet maker asked CryptoBilis to suspend product sales and delivery while it is investigating.

The Ledger Wallet Survey highlights the risks in hardware distribution and cryptocurrency self-custody. Hardware wallets often protect them by keeping private keys offline, reducing the risk of online attacks. However, damaged devices can leak sensitive recovery information before customers start using wallets. Ledger has not confirmed a security breach in its broader product range.
