ETH Vitalik Buterin opposes centralized AI governance and advocates an open source model.
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently criticized the proposal to concentrate artificial intelligence development rights among a few governments or technology companies. He believes that this highly concentrated power may bring new risks, and with the improvement of AI capabilities, open source governance is a more balanced path.
Buterin published a long article on the X platform, explaining why he disagreed with both mainstream views surrounding AI. He advocated that AI governance should remain open while being flexible enough to respond in a timely manner when serious threats arise.
Buterin questions opposing views on AI development.
According to Buterin's observation, the current debate is divided into two groups: one group believes that super-intelligent AI will come in 2040 or earlier unless developers deliberately slow down progress; the other group believes that although AI is a transformative technology, society can manage it without imposing major restrictions. However, Buterin disagreed with either argument. He believes that discussions should focus on building a governance structure that avoids concentration of power in the hands of a few organizations.
He further warned that allowing a small number of AI companies or governments to decide who can develop advanced systems could cause another series of problems. Such arrangements may reduce transparency and restrict broader groups of people from participating in AI research.
Buterin supports open source AI, but does not preclude necessary suspension
Therefore, Buterin prefers to support open source AI development. He pointed out that open models can promote collaboration, independent review and wider access while reducing reliance on centralized decision-makers. This concept is also consistent with the principles that have shaped decentralized blockchain networks over the years.
In addition, Buterin emphasized that supporting open source AI does not mean ignoring potential dangers. According to his post on X, if there is credible evidence that advanced systems pose a significant risk, he is willing to discuss the possibility of slowing or temporarily suspending AI development.
Governance is more important than prediction
Buterin's position places more emphasis on governance than prediction. He believes that rather than debating when super-intelligent AI will come, the more pressing issue is how to ensure that no single group has too much influence on the development of AI.
