Vitalik Buterin calls for the establishment of a transparent artificial intelligence regulatory mechanism
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, expressed concerns about the future direction of artificial intelligence (AI) and advocated a decentralized approach to promote its development and governance. Buterin warned that concentrating control of AI development in the hands of powerful organizations or governments could pose huge risks.
Is decentralized AI governance necessary?
Buterin believes that the process towards super-intelligent AI should be open and decentralized, rather than falling into the hands of centralized authorities. He emphasized the danger of leaving the direction of AI development in the hands of only a few leading entities, believing that this approach could damage both its effectiveness and security.
As a prominent figure in the field of blockchain technology and decentralization, Buterin warns that allowing large technology companies or government agencies to dominate the advancement of AI could offset the potential value of the technology. "Having a few companies or governments control who can conduct advanced AI research poses a significant threat," he said. A more open and accessible model is crucial to the safe development of AI."
Buterin advocates open source principles in AI governance, believing that broader participation and independent supervision can provide strong guarantees and prevent AI technology from becoming monopolized.
Super intelligent AI: Current differences
Buterin pointed out two main views about the future of AI. One party is eager to promote rapid development and predicts that super-intelligent AI may appear as early as 2040. The other party believes that AI is an inevitable development trend and can be safely controlled as long as it is handled carefully. Despite the differences, both sides agree that the question is not whether or not super-intelligent AI will emerge, but whether or not it will emerge.
Buterin is skeptical of both positions, arguing that the timeline and impact of these developments remain uncertain. He acknowledged growing concerns about the potential risks of AI and was willing to suspend its development if credible threats were identified. Despite this, he insists that these decisions require extensive community participation and opposes centralized forces leading the AI development path.
Decentralized governance can reduce the risks brought by centralized AI control. The open source model encourages wider participation and supervision of AI development. Broad community participation is critical to establishing reasonable AI security protocols.
Buterin's stance reflects the growing demand among technical experts for decentralized processes-not just financial networks such as Ethereum, but also the framework that determines the future direction of AI. His views emphasize the importance of transparency and community participation in AI governance, and as technology develops, he advocates the establishment of a more democratic governance system.
