Vitalik Buterin calls for the establishment of an open and decentralized artificial intelligence governance system.
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently expressed his views on the future of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing that its development and governance should not be controlled by a few powerful organizations or governments.
Calls for decentralized AI governance
Buterin pointed out in his latest post on Platform X that the path to super-intelligent AI should include decentralized and transparent oversight mechanisms rather than centralized authority. He believes that concentration of power will bring new risks and warns against handing over the evolution of AI to a few dominant groups.
As one of the leaders in the field of blockchain technology and decentralized systems, Butrin expressed concern about excessive control of AI by large technology companies or government agencies, believing that this could weaken the security and potential benefits of future AI systems.
Butrin emphasized that giving a small number of companies or governments the power to decide who can engage in advanced AI research could itself pose a danger. He proposed that in order to develop AI safely, a more open and accessible model must be adopted.
He suggested that open source principles should become the cornerstone of AI governance. He believes this will help wider participation, independent supervision, and establish more resilient safeguards to prevent abuse or monopoly of AI technology.
Different views on super-intelligent AI
Butrin divides advocates of AI development into two camps. One party advocates rapid advancement and believes that super-intelligent AI may arrive in 2040 or even earlier, unless the pace of development is deliberately slowed down. The other side views AI as an inevitable and transformative technology, but believes that its evolution can be safely and controllable without drastic intervention.
Despite differences in views, Buterin pointed out that both camps face a fundamental question: when super-intelligent AI will be implemented, not whether. He said he had reservations about both views because of uncertainties about the timeline and potential consequences.
Open to security discussions
While acknowledging the growing debate about the potential risks of advanced AI, Butlin said he is open to slowing down or suspending discussions about AI development if credible threats emerge. He stressed, however, that such decisions should not be made by a small number of centralized authorities; broad community participation and transparent processes were essential to establishing sound safeguards. Butlin stressed that he prefers solutions that protect society while avoiding concentrating power over AI trajectories in the hands of a few agencies.
Butrin's comments further reinforced the growing call among technicians not only to achieve decentralization in financial systems such as Ethereum, but also to implement this concept in the supervision and future direction of AI technology.
