Cryptocurrencies posted negative returns for the third consecutive quarter, and ETF outflows hit record
In the second quarter, the crypto market recorded negative returns for the third consecutive quarter, which is the longest decline since 2022. Weak spot prices, ETF outflows and sluggish on-chain activity continue to put pressure on large-market tokens. The Bitwise Top 10 Crypto Index fell 15.4% in the second quarter, and 8 of its 10 constituent stocks closed down at the end of the quarter. The spot Bitcoin ETF also recorded its worst quarterly outflow record on record, while trading volume, DeFi assets and on-chain activity all fell.
This consecutive decline marks a sharp correction from the ETF-driven optimism in the previous cycle. As early as the beginning of 2026, Bitcoin products showed record signs of outflows for 13 consecutive days, showing signs of institutional pressure, with hedge funds and brokers cutting exposure, while long-term holders absorbing some of the sell-off. The quarter also strengthened the correlation between cryptocurrencies and a wider range of risky assets. The correlation between crypto assets and the stock market has increased as investors reassess speculative growth trading in digital assets, AI stocks and high-beta public market stocks.
Forecasting market growth and RWA bucking the trend
The decline did not stop activity in the high-growth areas of the crypto industry. The forecast market volume reached a record $43.2 billion in the second quarter, up nearly 18 times from the same period last year, making it one of the strongest product trends on the market. The field has expanded from speculation in election season to broader trading verticals around sports, politics, macro events and company-specific markets. The recent record of $10.8 billion in forecast market volume in one week shows how quickly volume can concentrate when major public events, sports outcomes and hot contracts occur simultaneously.
Tokenized real-world assets (RWA) also continued to expand amid the wave of selling. Thanks to tokenized treasury bonds, private credit products, on-chain funds and equity-linked transactions, RWA assets have risen 50.3% year-to-date to $32.89 billion. Solana\'s tokenized stock market recently recorded a record high in tokenized stock trading volume, and xStocks, Backpack-related products and SpaceX-related tools have further pushed open market exposure onto the chain.
Crypto stocks are another exception. The Bitwise Crypto Innovators 30 Index rose 30.6% in the second quarter, showing that public market demand for exchanges, miners, brokers, custodians and infrastructure-related companies is much stronger than demand for large-market tokens themselves.
stablecoins continue to expand amid weak prices
Stable coins remain the most powerful settlement layer in the market. Stability coin settlement volume reached 2.3 times that of Visa, while the size of assets managed by stability coins has roughly doubled from the bottom of the bear market in 2022. Even as token prices weaken, payment networks and fintech companies continue to build around the digital dollar trajectory. Earlier this year, Visa added Polygon stablecoin settlement capabilities, while Mastercard expanded round-the-clock settlement on Solana, and large payment companies further penetrated into the stablecoin infrastructure.
The comparison in the current cycle diverges between price and usage. Trading activity in Ethereum is about 13 times higher than its bottom in 2022, DeFi\'s total locked position (TVL) has increased by more than 60%, and the size of assets managed by stablecoin has also roughly doubled.
