Global Systematically Important Banks Layout of the United Arab Emirates Digital Asset Market

A large global bank has recently taken a critical step in entering the United Arab Emirates digital asset market. On September 3, 2026, Standard Chartered Bank officially launched Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) spot trading services for institutional customers in United Arab Emirates. The business is carried out through its International Financial Center (DIFC) entity, which is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA).

Standard Chartered Bank said the move made it the first Global Systematically Important Bank (G-SIB) to provide institutional-level spot digital asset trading in United Arab Emirates and currently the only global bank to provide such services in the region. G-SIBs refer to banks identified by global regulators as critical to the stability of the international financial system.

Two years of expansion of the digital asset landscape in the United Arab Emirates

Since the launch of digital asset custody services in the United Arab Emirates in September 2024, Standard Chartered Bank has continued to deepen its local digital asset business. In June 2026, the bank signed a banking agreement with cryptocurrency exchange CoinMENA to provide legal currency deposit and withdrawal infrastructure, customer fund accounts and virtual account-based transaction management services through Standard Chartered Bank.

The launch of this spot trading business further improves Standard Chartered Bank's existing digital asset custody service system in United Arab Emirates. Eligible institutional customers can conduct BTC and ETH transactions through the bank's electronic trading channels (connected with existing banking platforms). Under the DFSA regulatory framework, qualified institutional investors can access the cryptocurrency market through a familiar foreign exchange trading interface and a regulated global banking system.

Approval of digital asset licenses in United Arab Emirates accelerates

Standard Chartered Bank is entering an increasingly competitive market. Capital Vault, an affiliated company of trading platform Capital.com, obtained a virtual asset license issued by the United Arab Emirates Capital Markets Authority in August 2026. At the same time, Capital.com announced plans to provide spot cryptocurrency services to local customers. In July 2026, digital bank Revolut received in-principle approval from the Dubai Virtual Assets Authority to carry out crypto-related business in the region.

The intensive license approval activity across the United Arab Emirates reflects the country's positioning itself as a regulated development destination for the digital asset industry. Standard Chartered Bank's entry not only adds an important role as a global systemically important bank to the market, but also allows eligible institutional customers to conduct spot transactions in BTC and ETH through the regulated global banking system rather than cryptocurrency exchanges.
