Polygon (POL) opens a cryptocurrency donation channel to help Nepal's official disaster relief fund

After floods that killed at least 1,252 people, Polygon (POL) has officially opened a channel for cryptocurrency donations to Nepal's official disaster relief fund.

Core Points

  • Polygon has launched a cryptocurrency donation channel, and the funds will be remitted to the Nepal Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund.
  • Donations are collected online by the American non-profit organization Engage Nepal and then transferred to the national fund.
  • The glacier collapse on August 26 has killed at least 1,252 people and left more than 4,200 people missing.

Polygon launches on-chain donation project in Nepal

Polygon Network announced the fundraising event on platform X, directing donors to visit nepalrelief.org and promising that all funds will be used for flood relief. Its Open Money Stack technology handles routing, cross-chain bridging, and currency conversion, so donors don't have to choose a specific network, just use any supported network and token to complete the donation.

Sandeep Nailwal, CEO of the Polygon Foundation, said the proceeds will be directly used to Nepal Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund. The website publishes a public wallet address that accepts USDC (USDC) on Ethereum (ETH) and Polygon networks. These contributions are collected and accounted for online by Engage Nepal, a U.S. nonprofit organization led by former U.S. Ambassador Scott DeLisi. Engage Nepal collaborated with local partners in Nepal and handed over the funds to government funds, with additional support from the exchange Coime.

Flood death toll in Nepal tests the effectiveness of encrypted aid

The glacier collapse on August 26 caused ice, rock and mud to pour down the Trisuli Corridor on the China-Nepal border, destroying settlements in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Authorities reported that at least 1,252 people were killed, more than 4,200 were missing, and about 7,500 houses were completely destroyed.

Officials estimate that about 20,000 homes in safer locations need to be rebuilt, and the cabinet has designated September 7 as a national day of mourning.

Currently, Nepal's official donation portal does not list the address of cryptocurrency wallets. This means that digital assets play a main role in the collection process, while the final handover still relies on charities that can exchange tokens and transfer funds through recognized channels.

Nepal police are warning donors to be wary of fake QR codes and personal accounts requesting flood donations. Following reports that someone had opened fraudulent accounts in the name of the fund, the central bank urged the public to verify the account name against detailed information released by the Prime Minister's Office. Aid agencies said about 65,000 people in five areas needed emergency drinking water and sanitation, including more than 22,000 children.

Crypto donors follow the Nailwal model

Polygon is not the only crypto company to respond. Ripple donated US$300,000 to World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps on August 29;Solana (SOL) auctioned nine advertising spaces from its X profile, raising USDC of US$166,946.50 for disaster relief in Nepal.

Nailwal has run similar activities before. He created the "COVID-19 India Crypto Relief Fund" at the peak of India's second wave of COVID-19 epidemic in 2021 to provide support by collecting donations in public wallets. The event later received a crypto gift worth nearly US$1 billion from Vitalik Buterin, which became a template for Polygon to learn from in Nepal this time.
