Zcash Orchard Pool: How to check if your ZEC balance still needs to be migrated

Zcash migration: What has changed to your ZEC since the Ironwood upgrade

If you store Zcash in a shielded address, it is likely that your balance has been in a deprecated block of the network since late July. It only takes a few minutes to check this: update your wallet to the latest version, get it fully synchronized, and then check to see if the app reports an ongoing migration. Do not send the entire balance anywhere while the migration is running.

The background is extraordinary. On July 28, 2026, Zcash enabled the new isolation pool and sealed the old isolation pool at the same time. At the time, approximately 3.66 million ZECs were present in the pool, which was equivalent to approximately $1.7 billion, according to CoinDesk. The network does not automatically move the funds; each holder needs to trigger the transfer in his or her wallet. For those who have not opened their wallets since then, simply has not triggered this action.

Orchard, Sapling and Ironwood: Overview of Zcash isolation pools

Isolation pools are part of Zcash's money supply, and their amounts and participant information are stored cryptographically in the blockchain and can only be read together with matching keys. The opposite is a transparent area, where addresses and amounts are as publicly visible as Bitcoin.

In practice, you will encounter two types of addresses. Transparent addresses that start with a "t" behave like ordinary cryptocurrency accounts. Quarantine addresses that start with "az" hide amounts and counterparties. Only the second scenario is affected by this migration.

Zcash has updated its isolation technology many times over the years. Sprout in 2016 is followed by Sapling in 2018, Orchard is added in 2022, and Ironwood is in existence since July 2026. Each stage is a separate pool with separate ledger management, and balances do not move between them on their own.

For daily use, this means that your wallet can hold amounts from multiple pools at the same time without you realizing it. The balance displayed adds them up. Only when a pool is abandoned will the total be found to be made up of individual components.

Orchard Vulnerability: Why Zcash needs a new isolation pool

The trigger was the discovery of security researcher Taylor Hornby. CoinDesk reports that there is a flaw in Orchard's proof circuit that could lead to the counterfeiting of ZEC without leaving any traces of blockchain. As a result, the flaw has been in the code since Orchard was launched in May 2022 and has lasted for approximately four years.

The vulnerability was discovered before it was confirmed to be exploited. There is currently no evidence of damage. However, this is the crux of such weaknesses: a faking operation that leaves no trace cannot be eliminated afterwards. Therefore, measures go beyond fixing flaws. The project rebuilt the ledger of the entire quarantined area from scratch.

The reasoning process is described in the upgrade specification. The specification states that the purpose of NU6.3 is to strengthen confidence in the integrity of Zcash's money supply to remedy the Orchard vulnerability. The specification continues that the "turnstile" ensures that the total supply remains within bounded limits. Since a large number of ZECs were still in the Orchard pool at the time of the repair, moving to a new pool was necessary.

The core of the process lies in the reversal of the burden of proof. Everything that enters Ironwood through turnstiles is publicly recorded, so reconciliation can be performed. And any potential counterfeit holdings that may arise in Orchard will stay there and not be transferred out.

Ironwood also brings a feature beyond the present moment: the specification mentions the possibility of restoring balances if powerful quantum computers break today's cryptography. For holdings in old pools, this protection clearly does not apply.

Detailed explanation of revolving door: Working principle of crossing between pools

The revolving door is a crossing mechanism between two pools. During this process, the amount moved is publicly displayed on the blockchain, allowing anyone to check the total supply. Inside the pool, amounts remain hidden. They become visible when crossing between two pools.

How the wallet performs this traversal is specified by the file ZIP 318 called "Orchard to Ironwood Migration." It doesn't describe the buttons you need to press, but rather describes the schedule that your wallet follows. This distinction explains much of the confusion surrounding migration.

At the level of consensus rules, there have been some subtle changes in parallel that are hardly obvious in daily use, but explain why old pools are called "sealed." After the upgrade, output entered into the Orchard pool can only be sent to addresses where the transaction creator can authorize spending. Translation: The old pool no longer accepts payments from third parties. It can only be emptied.

Is your ZEC still in the Orchard pool? How to check in your wallet

Check works much the same in every serious Zcash wallet. This requires you to spend a few minutes and check the version display.

Step 1: Update the wallet to the latest version

Wallets that do not know the new pool cannot be transferred to it. For example, Cake Wallet introduced support for Ironwood in version 6.4.0, based on its documentation. Before doing anything else, check the version number of the application. Our Software Wallet Comparison details the software suitable for different purposes.

Step 2: Get it fully synchronized

Isolated balances are detected locally by wallet scanning the blockchain. Until this synchronization is complete, your application cannot reliably know which pool the funds are located in. After a longer interruption, this can take a considerable amount of time.

Step 3: Find migration notifications

Wallets that support transfers display it, usually as a progress indicator or notification in the account area. If nothing is found there and your balance is fully available, it is already in the new pool. If the application reports that an operation is in progress, you are one of the people who still have some money in the pipeline.

Two points should be made clear at this time, because scams will form around each migration. No official website requires you to enter a mnemonic to save your balance. No support agent will ask you to do this. The entire process runs in your wallet without external involvement. If you hold a large amount of money, custody issues are more important anyway. Our Hardware Wallet Comparison shows which devices can isolate keys from computers.

How long does the Zcash migration take and why your wallet deliberately extends it

Anyone who expects to get it done with one click and get it done after two confirmations will be disappointed. Transmission delays for hours or even days are due to design.

The reason is the visibility of the revolving door. A single crossing with an odd amount of money will become a fingerprint, allowing the wallet to be subsequently identified. ZIP 318 responds to this with three precautions that the app implements in the background.

First, the wallet breaks down your balance into fixed denominations. Allowed denomination forms are 1, 2, or 5 times the power of 10, such as 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, 1, or 0.5 ZEC. Each partial amount passes through the turnstile as its own transaction, thereby being combined with the partial amounts of many other users.

It then disperses these transactions over time and extracts cryptographic anchors from a unified boundary height across the network. This creates integrated traversal user groups. Finally, the specification separates synchronization from sending: wallets must not perform both operations simultaneously in the same background session, otherwise observers may connect the two.

In practice, this means that your balance temporarily appears to be separated. One part is already in the new pool and the other part is still in the old pool. This is not an error or loss, but a normal state during transmission.

Three errors that slow down the migration of your ZEC balances

The application is closed

Transfer only progresses when the wallet is open and synchronized. Turn it off and the transmission will be suspended. The specification clearly states on this point: at most, try your best to perform in the background, and the wallet has no obligation to send traversal without the user's participation. Anyone who opens the app once a month will extend the process accordingly.

Send full holdings halfway through transmission

Cake Wallet's documentation clearly recommends waiting until the migration is complete before making payments, especially any attempt to send the full balance at once. During transfer, a portion of your balance is locked in the transaction being prepared. Therefore, full payment may fail or disrupt schedules.

Recovering wallet on a new device

This is the most easily ignored. According to ZIP 318, a running migration may not be recoverable on another device, nor may it be possible to continue after recovery from a mnemonic. Discovering unspent wallets held by Orchard after such a restore may treat the situation as a new migration and start over. If you want to replace the equipment anyway, please let the transfer complete first.

How is the Zcash migration progressing: How much data is left from the end of June to the end of August

can be quantified. The following numbers are from Pine Analytics 'third quarter 2026 report, which shows pool holdings on a weekly basis.

  • June 30, 2026: Orchard pool holds 3.77 million ZECs. The total number of quarantined holdings is 4.42 million ZECs, accounting for 26.3% of the circulating supply.
  • July 28, 2026: Ironwood launches. Orchard Pool holds approximately 3.66 million ZECs.
  • August 17, 2026: A total of 3.08 million ZEC flowed out of the old pool.
  • August 24, 2026: Cumulative outflow reached 3.73 million ZEC.
  • August 31, 2026: Orchard pool still holds 470,000 ZECs, Ironwood pool holds 3.84 million. Total quarantined holdings rose to 4.86 million ZECs, an increase of 9.9% from the end of June.

As a result, within five weeks, approximately 87% of the old pools passed through the turnstile route. However, in the last week of August, only 46,000 ZEC was added. What remains is obviously not a backlog of work that will be cleared automatically, but the residue of a wallet that no one has opened.

A comparison with earlier pool changes shows how fast the cleanup is. When Sapling was launched in 2018, only 8% of the predecessor pool moved five weeks later, compared with 54% a year later. When Orchard launches in 2022, it will be only 1.2% five weeks later. The people who are still in the old pool today belong to a minority, and no one is building tools for minorities anymore.

The price makes people feel the scale. We obtained data on September 13, 2026 through CoinGecko's public price interface: US$1,093.69 or € 941.86 per ZEC. As a result, the remaining 470,000 ZECs at the end of the month are equivalent to approximately 443 million euros. For reference: At the time the data was obtained, Zcash had a market value of approximately US$18 billion, ranking ninth among the largest cryptocurrencies, up 124.6% in 30 days and down 7.9% in the past seven days.

Turnstile reveals what you are: Privacy disadvantages of migration

Specifications publicly point out the cost of the program. The specifications say turnstiles disclose amounts moved between pools, including amounts moved to Ironwood. As a result, anyone who transfers its quarantined holdings has announced its size in the blockchain.

This is the reason for the denomination. If your balance passes through the turnstile in portions of 10 or 50 ZEC and thousands of other wallets use the same denomination, then a single crossing will have little personal impact on you. In contrast, a one-time crossing of 137.42 ZEC is a marker that can be found again later.

This leads to a counterintuitive suggestion: Don't take charge of the process yourself. Anyone who is impatient and pushes their holdings across through a single large transaction saves a few days, but gives up the entire reason for using a quarantined address-that is, the concealment of the amount.

Important background information: The vulnerabilities discovered involved ledger management, not confidentiality. According to the specification, there is no reason to assume that keying material for existing addresses will be leaked by it. As a result, your old address has not become unsafe.

ZEC on the exchange: Why pool migration mainly does not affect you

If you hold a ZEC on the trading platform, you will not be able to access the pool anyway. There, the provider decides what form to hold customer balances, and if affected, it performs its own transfers. For you, this is a provider quality issue, not a task.

There are still two points worth noting. Before planning a withdrawal, please check whether ZEC is open for deposits and withdrawals on the provider's status page. And check if your provider is still listing the coin. The EU has exerted regulatory pressure on private coins, which we have broken down in the outline of the ban on private coins transactions in the plan. If you need alternate access points, you can find regulated alternatives in our Cryptocurrency Exchange Comparison .

When you bring holdings into your wallet from a trading platform, they fall into a transparent or quarantined area depending on the type of address. The quarantined amount entered the new pool today. Under the changed consensus rules, the old pool no longer accepts payments from others.

What happens if you leave the Orchard balance in place

Nothing happens in the short term. There is no deadline on the calendar for Orchard holdings to expire, and transfers are said to be voluntary and user-initiated. As of September 13, 2026, the project has not announced a closure date for the old pool.

The direction nonethereal is clear and stated in the specification itself. The specification states that if funds are still in the Sprout, Sapling or Orchard pool, they will not be restored; once the reference agreement is closed, all such funds will not be accessible. They should be relocated to Ironwood pools to benefit from the new features. This is the wording of a technical document that describes what happened one day when the network shut down the old protocol.

In addition, there is another practice point that has an impact earlier than any closure. Tools, wallets and help pages follow the majority. By isolating residual holdings with less than 3% of supply, support for old pools will not improve but will get worse. People who can complete transfers with progress bars today may have to manually rebuild it within two years.

By the way, because it overlaps in time: Coinholder voting on the next network upgrade NU7 format is currently running with a deadline of September 14, 2026 at 19:00 UTC. A separate article we have voted on in Nu7 How to participate is described in. The process has nothing to do with pool migration; it just happens to fall on the same calendar.

Check Zcash migration: summary of key points

Open your Zcash wallet and check the version. Only wallets that know the Ironwood pool can perform the transfer. Which software manages it and where its limitations are detailed in our Software Wallet Comparison .

Keep the application open until the process is complete. Migration only progresses when the wallet is open and synchronized, and deliberately spreads itself over hours or days. Please do not send your entire balance during this period. Anyone who wants to save the key on a separate device while doing this will find the device in Hardware Wallet Comparison .

Check your trading venue individually. The holdings at the provider are not something you migrate yourself. What matters is whether deposits and withdrawals are open and whether ZEC is still on the list. An overview of regulated providers is provided by our Cryptocurrency Exchange Comparison .

The technical basis of this transmission can be checked. The rules for the wallet are in ZIP 318, and the changed consensus rules and upgrade reasons are in the ZIP 229 file on the version 6 transaction format. Both texts are technical in nature, but they are the source every wallet relies on.
