ADA Cardano achieves native payment support in the official x402 protocol codebase, achieving an important milestone in digital payment.
Cardano has made significant progress in the field of digital payments. Native support for Cardano has now been added to its official x402 protocol codebase. This integration, completed by Cardano Foundation engineers, brings direct Cardano compatibility to the x402 open payment infrastructure, broadening Cardano's use scenarios in standardized payment workflows.
Native integration in open payment tools
This update means that developers developing x402-based applications, ranging from traditional services to autonomous AI agents, can now leverage Cardano just like other mature payment networks. The support covers client, server and mediation components and provides complete examples, compatible with Cardano's mainnet, pre-production and preview environments.
Previously, Cardano-based x402 payments could only be achieved through third-party projects such as Masumi, but incorporating it into the official codebase simplified the process. Developers no longer need to rely entirely on a separate Cardano implementation, which significantly lowers integration barriers and promotes rapid adoption in new projects. Native Cardano support in the x402 codebase makes multi-network payment processing more convenient for developers, who can now access Cardano using standardized tools and reusable components.
About x402 and its industry impact
x402 is an open payment protocol originally created by Coinbase. Its name comes from the HTTP "402 Payment Required" status code-a rarely used indicator designed specifically for digital transactions. x402 leverages this mechanism to enable applications and AI agents to request and process payments directly on the Internet without relying on externally hosted payment pages.
For developers, this simplifies the integration process and creates a unified foundation for handling access-controlled APIs and digital services. An application can tell another service or agent that resource access requires payment, and the agreement will then facilitate direct, intra-agreement settlement.

x402 's interest in technology and finance continues to grow. In July this year, the x402 Foundation was established with support from dozens of well-known organizations including Amazon Cloud Technology, American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe and Visa.
A cross-industry alliance is driving the development of x402, marking its status as the next generation payment standard in the digital and AI-driven economy, and Cardano has direct access to this expanding ecosystem.
