Cardano joins hands with x402: An important milestone for digital payment systems
Cardano achieved an important breakthrough by deeply integrating native support into its official codebase with the open payment protocol x402. This progress, facilitated by engineers from the Cardano Foundation, allows developers to use Cardano directly in x402-based applications and artificial intelligence (AI) agents, and further simplifies its interface with other network-enabled underlying architectures.
Changes brought by x402 infrastructure integration
This integration covers multiple components such as clients, servers, mediation nodes and runinstances. It is worth noting that the scope of support not only includes the Cardano main network, but also extends to pre-production and preview environments. As a result, developers can directly use the official toolkit and no longer have to rely on a stand-alone Cardano application to conduct business.
Prior to this, Cardano-based x402 payment functions could only be implemented through third-party projects such as Masumi. This update will support direct integration into the official x402 codebase, significantly lowering the technical threshold for leveraging the Cardano Consensus Network. Engineers at the Cardano Foundation have played a key role in adding native support, providing developers with ready-made client and server components.
Is x402 expanding its application scenarios in AI agents?
Yes. x402 was originally developed by Coinbase as an open payment protocol that allows applications to request and process payments over the Internet via the historically idle HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code.
Simply put, the system can tell the service provider that access to another application or AI agent requires a specified fee. This capability is particularly important for autonomous AI agents because they can directly pay for API access, data acquisition, computing resources, or other digital services.
The x402 is designed to be net neutral and currency independent, which brings the added advantage of supporting multiple payment networks within the same application. This flexibility makes it easier to integrate Cardano into applications with a multi-chain architecture.
Why is enterprise support for x402 increasing?
x402's influence continues to expand as it receives continued support from major cryptocurrency and payment companies. Founded in July this year, the x402 Foundation has received endorsements from many well-known institutions, including Amazon Cloud Technology (AWS), American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe and Visa.
This addition to the official codebase is expected to increase the number of applications that can use Cardano for settlement. In addition, it may also reduce initial costs for developers, increasing Cardano's visibility in multi-network-enabled payment scenarios.
