ALGO Algorand's consensus layer has reached a new high level of decentralization: there are 1,562 active verification nodes
On October 6, 2026, Algorand's consensus layer took a solid step on the road to decentralization, with the number of active verification nodes climbing to 1,562, setting a new high in the past seven days. According to network telemetry data tracked by Chainspect, the month-on-week growth rate was 0.39%, up from the previous week's peak of 1,556 recorded on September 29.
Steady increase in verifier engagement
This incremental gain continues the overall trend of expanding the scope of online participation. According to a report released by the Algorand Foundation in December 2025, the number of validators in 2025 increased from 897 to 1,726. The 1,562 node data reached on October 6 reflects consolidation within that range, indicating that the network maintains a significantly larger validator base than it was two years ago.
The distribution of pledges has also undergone major changes that tilt towards the community. As of July 2026, Algorand continues to make progress in decentralization and cybersecurity, with a total of more than 2.07 billion $ALGO pledged. Among them, the proportion of pledges held by the community was 81.1%, while the share of foundations was 18.9%.
Why the number of verifiers matters to pure proof of stake (PPoS)
The Algorand blockchain uses a distributed Byzantine protocol that leverages the pure proof of stake (PPoS) mechanism. This means that as long as the vast majority of pledges are in non-malicious hands, the system can tolerate malicious users and reach consensus without central authority. The protocol requires minimal computing resources per node, making it possible to efficiently confirm transactions.
