Building a new financial system for AI agents
Despite the recent heated debate on artificial intelligence (AI), BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has released an important assessment report on the topic.
In its latest "The intersection of AI and digital assets" report, BlackRock pointed out that as AI agents play an increasingly important role in the economy, blockchain-based payment infrastructure needs may increase significantly.
Simulation results show that stablecoins are used for payments and bitcoin is used for storing value.
This report titled "Machine Native Economy: AI and Digital Assets" was written by Robert Mitchnick, head of digital assets at BlackRock. The report cited research results from the non-profit organization Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI).
In this study, researchers asked AI agents which assets they prefer to use for payments and long-term storage, and analyzed their behavior. The results show that AI agents usually prefer to use stablecoins for transaction payments and use Bitcoin as a long-term storage asset.
It is important to emphasize that BlackRock made it clear that these results are based on data from model simulations of responses, rather than actual observed transaction records. Therefore, this study does not prove that AI agents are currently actually accumulating Bitcoin.
The company views these findings as early data, pointing to a possible currency structure: stablecoins can be used as a means of payment and Bitcoin as a store of value.
Artificial intelligence may drive demand for bitcoin and crypto assets.
BlackRock said in the report that the development of artificial intelligence may evolve from pure information generation to the ability to autonomously perform transactions, process payments and without human intervention. Autonomous systems that can utilize necessary payment infrastructure can have a significant impact on financial infrastructure.
In this context, BlackRock believes that stablecoins can play an important role in transactions conducted by AI agents. The main reason is that stablecoins have a more predictable price structure and stable unit of account attributes.
Although BPI research shows that AI agents prefer Bitcoin in terms of long-term value storage, BlackRock does not interpret this as "AI agents will hoard BTC." Instead, the company views these findings as early data for a potential AI-driven currency architecture: stablecoins used as a payment medium and bitcoin used as a long-term store of value.
In addition, BlackRock also pointed out that the increased use of stablecoins may increase transaction volume on blockchain networks, potentially creating demand for cryptocurrencies.
