Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announces update roadmap
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced an updated roadmap, which he called the third major transformation of the network, and its scale is comparable to the \"merger\" that ends proof-of-work mining in 2022. He said that almost all core components of the protocol will be rebuilt within three to four years, and there is no need to force migration of existing applications.
Butrin shared this conclusion in a post on July 4, 2026, following a gathering of Ethereum researchers in Berlin. The update plan, called Lean Ethereum, was initially outlined in 2025, and its progress is publicly available.
