AI agents enter the security laboratory

The Ethereum Foundation security team has begun to run coordinated AI agents directly against Ethereum core protocol code, and experiments have achieved substantial results. Among the confirmed findings is a vulnerability at the point-to-point (P2P) network layer. The vulnerability has been fixed and publicly disclosed as a CVE entry. Signal-to-noise problem

However, the more enlightening discovery is not the vulnerability itself, but the level of \"noise\" generated around the vulnerability. AI agents generate a large number of reports that sound confident, but the vast majority of them turn out to be erroneous, duplicate, or point to code paths that are actually inaccessible.

This phenomenon is not unique to Ethereum. Across the security industry, AI-assisted discovery is driving a sharp rise in the number of vulnerability reports, but the proportion of vulnerabilities that really require action is much smaller. The challenge has shifted from \"discovering vulnerabilities\" to \"screening for vulnerabilities.\" Classification, verification and response are now bottlenecks, and human capabilities in this regard remain limited.

The Ethereum Foundation\'s experiments reflect this reality. AI can scan codebases on a scale unmatched by human teams, but the credibility of any findings ultimately depends on experienced human reviewers at the end of the process. How to balance the relationship between AI and humans will determine how important AI-assisted security can play in the broader blockchain ecosystem.

In addition, the foundation has increased the maximum reward for critical protocol vulnerabilities from US$250,000 to US$1 million, promising to confirm reports within 48 hours and complete preliminary assessments within one week. This expanded plan demonstrates the foundation\'s seriousness with regard to protocol security as a strategic priority.
