This data is derived from the Cambridge Blockchain Network Sustainability Index, a research project led by the University of Cambridge\'s Judge School of Business. Its Ethereum network tracker continuously monitors network-wide data, including the geographical distribution of node activity. According to the index\'s network analysis panel, the United States contributes approximately 31% of Ethereum node activity. No other single country can match it, making the United States the dominant hub for Ethereum\'s operations and maintenance infrastructure.
Cambridge University\'s blockchain research has also focused on Ethereum\'s environmental footprint, especially after the network shifted from proof of work to proof of stake in September 2022. This shift significantly reduces energy consumption, but does not change the geographical distribution of node operators.
What node centralization in the United States means for Ethereum
Nodes are computers responsible for verifying transactions, storing blockchain data, and enforcing protocol rules. Its geographical distribution is a core indicator of the actual decentralization of the network-not just in theory, but also in practice. For market participants, this centralized data provides more context for assessing the risk profile of Ethereum\'s infrastructure. A network where one-third of a node\'s activity falls within a single regulatory jurisdiction has very different risk characteristics than a network where activity is evenly distributed across dozens of countries.
This finding also further highlights the U.S. role in the broader crypto infrastructure dialogue. Institutions such as Circle, which was recently approved by the OCC to become a national digital currency bank, and major pledge service providers are all built on the same U.S. infrastructure landscape. For Ethereum developers and governance participants, Cambridge University\'s data could spark a new round of discussion about geographical diversity strategies. Efforts to encourage nodes to operate in underrepresented areas are expected to gradually reduce risks in a single jurisdiction.
Policy observers in jurisdictions such as the UK may also learn from it. When countries weigh their own encryption regulatory frameworks, understanding the actual operating status of blockchain infrastructure can provide a more solid basis for policy formulation than simply token prices.
