What makes Bitcoin a new currency?

Bitcoin is global. You can send it to the other side of the world as easily as you would pay in cash in the real world. It does not close on weekends, charges no fees, and imposes no restrictions.

Bitcoin is irrevocable. Bitcoin is like cash, in the sense that the sender cannot undo the transaction. In contrast, credit cards, traditional online payment systems, and bank transactions can be revoked after the payment is completed (sometimes months after the initial transaction), due to the centralized intermediary that completes the transaction. This puts merchants at a higher risk of fraud, which can lead to higher fees being paid with credit cards.

Bitcoin is private. When paying with Bitcoin, there is no need for bank statements and unnecessary personal information to merchants. Bitcoin transactions do not contain any identifying information other than the Bitcoin address and amount involved.

Bitcoin is safe. Due to the cryptographic nature of the Bitcoin network, Bitcoin payments are fundamentally more secure than standard debit/credit card transactions. When making Bitcoin payments, there is no need to send sensitive information over the Internet. The risk of your financial information being compromised or identity stolen is very low.

Bitcoin is open. Every transaction on the Bitcoin network is publicly announced, without exception. This means there is no room to manipulate transactions (except in the highly unlikely case of a 51% attack) or change the supply of Bitcoin. The software that makes up the core of Bitcoin is free and open source, so anyone can view the code.

Bitcoin is safe. For more than a decade, the Bitcoin network has never been successfully hacked by hackers. Because the system is permission-free and open-source, countless computer scientists and cryptographers have been able to examine all aspects of the network and its security.
