Citi views this partnership as an extension of its network strategy. “We have over 300 payment and settlement networks in 94 markets around the world. We believe that partnering with Coinbase is a natural extension of our ‘Network of Networks’ strategy,” said Debopama Sen, head of Citi Payments and Services. She added that customers desire access to borderless, 24/7 payment services.

Coinbase sees this partnership as a key step in building the infrastructure for the next wave of finance. Brian Foster, head of Coinbase’s cryptocurrency services, said, “Citi’s global network and payment expertise make it an ideal partner for us to help businesses leverage digital assets.” He emphasized that the goal is to simplify and expand institutional access to digital asset payments.

This partnership arises from the increasing use of stablecoins in business processes. Citi says that customers not only require speed and uptime, but also programmable features, conditional payments, and lower costs.

Sen added that the bank is exploring solutions for on-chain stablecoin payments, and he believes stablecoins can be a catalyst for expanding customer capabilities.

Bridging the gap between cryptocurrencies and traditional banking systems

For cryptocurrency users, these pain points are not unfamiliar. Transactions are immediate, but the actual settlement of funds often takes much longer. Transfers via ACH or wire transfers may take hours or even days, which can lead to issues with reconciliation and delays in operating funds. Establishing a clearer link between legal tender accounts and tokenized dollars can reduce fees, minimize costs, and narrow the gap between transaction execution and cash settlement.

Citibank's approach is based on its recently launched product lineup. The bank has offered tokenization services and 24/7 dollar settlement solutions for institutional clients, while also maintaining coverage of major e-commerce markets.

Management officials stated that the bank serves 90% of the largest e-commerce companies and most of the world’s leading fintech companies, providing distribution channels for this new payment method.

Citibank's partnership with Coinbase is seen as a key step towards establishing a robust infrastructure for stablecoins.

For Coinbase, deeper bank connections help convert cryptographic demands into actual payments.

Simplified processes can reduce friction between financial management teams and compliance departments, while predictable scheduling can support cross-border transactions. If stablecoin payments become available, they could offer nearly instant settlement, along with clearer audit trails compared to traditional payment methods.

As stablecoins and tokenized deposits compete to become the cornerstone of digital payments, the risks have been increasing. Major issuers are constantly pushing for bank-level custody services, real-time verification mechanisms, and integration with compliance tools. Banks and exchanges can establish standardized financing and settlement partnerships, which can accelerate the adoption of these technologies by institutions, without the need for companies to rebuild their core systems.
