Before the Terra ecosystem collapsed, Kwon was one of the most prominent figures in the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry in 2022. Many experts believe that the collapse of the Terra ecosystem led to a market meltdown, causing multiple companies to declare bankruptcy and causing significant losses to investors.
Defense lawyers requested that Kwon be sentenced to no more than five years in the United States, while prosecutors strive for at least twelve years.
The U.S. government\'s sentencing recommendation states that the losses caused by Kwon \"exceed\" the combined losses caused by former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, former Celsius CEO Alex Masinsky and OneCoin founder Carl Sebastian Greenwood. All three are currently serving many years in federal prison.
Will Kwon Do-Heng serve his sentence in South Korea?
Lawyers for the Terraform co-founder said that even if Judge Engelmeyer sentences Kwon to serve his sentence, he would \"immediately return to pretrial detention pending criminal charges in South Korea\" and could face up to 40 years in prison in South Korea (where he holds Korean citizenship).
Thursday\'s sentencing hearing may mark the end of Kwon\'s role in the 2022 collapse of Terraform. During the downturn in the cryptocurrency market, his whereabouts remained unknown until he was arrested and detained in Montenegro pending extradition to the United States. In March 2023, he was charged in the United States for his role in the Terraform incident.
South Korean authorities issued an arrest warrant for Kwon in 2022, but have not detained him since the collapse of the Terra ecosystem. While South Korean prosecutors are applying for extradition to Montenegro and the United States, they are also filing similar lawsuits against individuals related to the Terraform project.
