Bitcoin is often described as "digital gold"
Both assets are scarce, independent of traditional fiat currencies, and are often seen as a protective tool against currency instability. However, when war breaks out or geopolitical tensions suddenly escalate, Bitcoin and gold often perform very differently.
Gold has a history of hundreds of years as a crisis asset. Bitcoin, on the other hand, provides characteristics that gold cannot: an asset that can be transferred globally, held directly, and moved across borders without physical transportation. So, which one performs better in times of crisis?
Why gold usually dominates early responses
When geopolitical risks suddenly increase, investors often look for assets they already view as defensive. Gold has historically benefited from this behavior because of its established position in central bank reserves, institutional portfolios and personal wealth management. In contrast, Bitcoin's response is unpredictable.
In times of severe market pressure, Bitcoin may trade more like a high-risk technology stock than a traditional safe-haven asset. As investors raise cash and reduce risk exposure, they may sell bitcoin like stocks. This sensitivity is particularly important when geopolitical tensions cause oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields to rise. As shown by the recent surge in oil prices to $108 a barrel, rising energy prices could reignite inflation concerns, putting additional pressure on Bitcoin and technology stocks.
Bitcoin has different forms of safe-haven appeal
Key differences between Bitcoin and gold
As a result, gold has a stronger track record as a short-term geopolitical hedging tool, and the characteristics provided by Bitcoin may become valuable in responding to another type of crisis.
What if the war causes oil prices to exceed $100?
