Ripple's annual transaction volume exceeds US$16 trillion, focusing on increasing the proportion of on-chain settlements.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse revealed that the company has processed nearly US$16 trillion in transactions in the past year, highlighting the growing size of its payment ecosystem. Garlinghouse compared this figure with Visa's annual transaction volume, highlighting Ripple's ambition to compete directly with top traditional payment networks.

Acquisition activity expands Ripple payment traffic

The main driving force for Ripple's transaction volume growth comes from key acquisitions over the past year. The Hidden Road platform, now renamed Ripple Prime, settled approximately $3 trillion in transactions. At the same time, the GTreasury platform, renamed Ripple Treasury, handled approximately $13 trillion in payment activity. Together, these platforms provide Ripple with access to large payment and clearing traffic that previously ran almost entirely through the traditional financial system.

Micro Dictionary: Ripple Prime and Ripple Treasury- Ripple Prime is an institutional prime broker business unit that provides clearing, trading and settlement services;Ripple Treasury integrates GTreasury to provide advanced payment and cash management services to companies.

Despite its large size, Garlinghouse pointed out that only 0.1% of these total transactions are currently settled on-chain via XRP, stablecoins or other blockchain-based assets. He said that even a 0.1% increase would translate into a $160 billion increase in on-chain activity, setting an ambitious goal for the company's blockchain application promotion.

Focus on on-chain settlement and utility

Garlinghouse emphasized that Ripple's future success depends on migrating more payment traffic to the blockchain track. He said that expanding the proportion of payments settled on-chain is the core of providing institutional customers with a faster, more economical and more reliable trading experience. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse described the $16 trillion milestone as "Visa level" and added: "The priority is to move more of this activity down the chain to achieve speed, cost and settlement certainty."

Executives in the corporate finance world are increasingly evaluating blockchain solutions. Garlinghouse pointed out that chief financial officers, financial executives and other business leaders are asking how digital assets can release locked up capital and improve liquidity. He emphasized that this growing demand stems from actual financial utility rather than speculative trading interests. "You have to be practical. If it's just speculation or meme, it's not sustainable,"Garlinghouse commented, reaffirming Ripple's commitment to improving the efficiency of real financial institutions.

The core of Ripple's strategy is to shift a larger proportion of its expanding payments and treasury business to blockchain technology. Although the company has achieved significant transaction size, it recognizes that increasing chain share will be key to its long-term growth.

Opportunities and next steps

Even a small step towards blockchain-based settlement could bring considerable trading activity growth to XRP ledgers and related infrastructure, especially as Ripple launches new digital assets such as its enterprise-oriented stablecoin RLUSD. Garlinghouse views the US$16 trillion benchmark as both a major achievement and a basis for further growth. As its institutional product portfolio continues to expand, Ripple aims to translate its scale advantages into a higher proportion of on-chain settlement volume.
