Sky Protocol is a renamed version of MakerDAO, a decentralized protocol based on Ethereum that supports DAI stablecoins. Applying traditional credit rating frameworks to decentralized entities in the chain is a relatively novel attempt. The B3 level rating reflects both the size of the agreement (seen in the total lock-in value on DeFiLlama) and the uncertainty inherent in evaluating smart contract-based systems under traditional credit methodologies.
Significance of ratings from a stakeholder perspective
For institutional investors and lenders considering entering Sky Protocol, Moody's official rating provides a standard reference point that was previously lacking in most DeFi protocols. Credit ratings are often a prerequisite for participation by regulated financial institutions, so a B3 rating is expected to expand the pool of counterparties willing to formally interact with the agreement.
At the same time, a B3 rating also has practical limitations. It is below the investment-grade threshold required by many agency mandates, which may limit rather than expand the participation of the most risk-controlled allocators. The market performance of SKY tokens provides additional background information, although credit ratings and token market value measure different dimensions of risk.
A wider range of stablecoin issuers are also grappling with formal institutional and regulatory frameworks, such as Tether signing a memorandum of understanding with the National Bank of Kazakhstan to explore a stablecoin framework. In addition, the rating does not capture on-chain operational risks, smart contract vulnerabilities, or governance dynamics as protocol-specific audits or on-chain analytics do. Stakeholders who rely solely on Moody's ratings without examining agreement-level fundamentals, such as mortgage rates and governance engagement, have incomplete information.
Background of credit evaluation of crypto assets
Sky Protocol's rating is part of the gradual extension of traditional financial infrastructure to crypto-native entities. As institutions become increasingly interested in the space, stablecoin issuers, cryptocurrency exchanges and now the DeFi protocol are increasingly subject to formal credit review. Regulated agencies 'entry into digital assets, including banks' extending crypto access to millions of retail customers, is creating downstream demand for standardized risk assessments provided by rating agencies.
Whether a B3 rating ultimately helps or constrains Sky Protocol's institutional relationships depends on how counterparties weigh it against protocol-specific data. Credit ratings transform DeFi risk into familiar language in the traditional financial community, but this transformation is still incomplete. The stable outlook leaves room for the agreement to improve its status over time. Market participants will continue to observe whether the rating will affect governance decisions on on-chain behavior or agreements in the coming weeks.
