OpenAI has hired Ismail Elmas as head of sales for its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Elmas was previously responsible for Cursor's European operations, which SpaceX acquired for $60 billion.

Appointment details and strategic significance
According to German Business Zeitung, the ChatGPT manufacturer has appointed Elmas as vice president of sales in the EMEA region and has its office located in Munich. The newspaper was informed of the appointment in advance and issued statements from Elmas himself and OpenAI's global sales director. People familiar with the matter pointed out that the appointment is seen as a strong signal of OpenAI's development in Germany, as OpenAI announced it will open its first office in Germany in 2025.
It is reported that all OpenAI sales staff in Europe, the Middle East and Africa will report to Elmas. Elmas has previously expanded its business presence for Cursor in the region. It is reported that in order to prepare for the upcoming stock market listing (reportedly postponed until 2027), OpenAI plans to significantly expand its European sales team.
High-level background and cooperation origins
Brian McCarthy, vice president of global sales for OpenAI, said Elmas will help companies leverage new technologies to create real value as the company continues to grow in Europe.
Elmas said that OpenAI has changed the way people work and the way companies operate. He emphasized that artificial intelligence brings huge opportunities to European companies, but OpenAI must be close to customers and have a deep understanding of the challenges they face.
The two executives had shared employer experience. McCarthy joined OpenAI in September this year after leading Cursor and SpaceX's global revenue businesses. In 2023, when data security company Rubrik appointed Elmas to lead its international operations, McCarthy served as the company's chief revenue officer. In addition, McCarthy is the first senior talent hired by Dali Rajic after joining OpenAI as chief revenue officer on August 24.
The rupture of Cursor's relationship with SpaceX
Before joining OpenAI, Elmas served as Cursor's senior vice president of EMEA. In June, when SpaceX held Cursor's purchase options, he revealed that the company would set up its European headquarters in London and planned to increase its regional workforce from about 80 to about 200 by the end of the year.
