XRP giant whale activity has dropped significantly, and retail trading share has increased
In the past week, the activity gap between giant whale and retail investors in the XRP market has narrowed sharply. The change coincides with a period of heightened market volatility, pushing XRP prices to their lowest level in a month.
Giant whale activity drops sharply
The latest data provided by blockchain analysis providers shows that in the past day, the dominance of XRP giant whale in centralized exchanges has dropped significantly. "Giant whale dominance" refers to the share of trading and exchange activity held by large holders (i.e."Giant Whales") relative to smaller retail traders.
From September 30 to October 8, the spread between giant whales and retail investors on all centralized exchanges dropped from 64% to 46.7%. That represented a contraction of 17.3 percentage points-a decline of about 27% in just over a week.
This decrease suggests that large XRP holders have reduced trading activity on exchanges, while retail participants have increased their participation. Although large holders have reduced their trading participation, the shift does not necessarily mean a massive sell-off. Instead, it reflects a period of hibernation for the whales, with exchange activity only slightly higher than typical retail trading volume.
Giant whale versus retail spreads are often used to measure the relative activity of major market participants relative to small investors, which can provide insight into potential changes in market sentiment or liquidity.
The impact on Binance is particularly significant
The slowdown in giant whale activity is particularly evident at Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. According to the same data, the price difference between giant whales and retail investors fell from 68% to 54.9% in eight days alone on the coin table.
This decrease was 13.1 percentage points, which is equivalent to a 19.3% decrease in Binanan's relative whale activity. This suggests that large holders have taken a more cautious or passive stance during recent market volatility.
As retail participation increases and the giant whale's influence on trading volumes weakens, some analysts point out that XRP's market momentum and liquidity dynamics may change in the short term. Large holders appear to be taking a step back and allowing retail investors to take a larger share of activity in the XRP market, especially on leading platforms such as Binance.
Although whale trading activity has declined, there is no clear indication that these major holders are actively selling. On the contrary, most on-chain indicators show that they have suspended their usual trading behavior, which may reflect that they are in a wait-and-see or uncertain state during periods of continued market turmoil.
