SoFi Technologies shares fall: Despite a partnership with MasterCard
Despite the announcement of a new partnership with MasterCard in Mexico, SoFi Technologies (SOFI) shares fell 1.44% to close at $15.44 in intraday trading on Thursday. The stock fell $0.22, but rebounded from a noon low of about $15.27.
Expand cryptocurrency payments through MasterCard protocol
At the same time, SoFi Tech Solutions partnered with Mexican financial technology companies Orbi and MasterCard to launch cryptocurrency-linked payment cards. SoFi Tech Solutions announced the partnership on October 8, aiming to expand digital asset payments in Mexico. The program allows Orbi customers to spend with traditional funds or funds from their cryptocurrency balances. During the service process, cryptocurrency is instantly converted into fiat at the time of purchase, allowing merchants to receive regular payments.
This cooperation combines SoFi's financial infrastructure, MasterCard's payment network and Orbi's digital financial services. SoFi Tech Solutions will be responsible for card issuance, transaction processing, authorization and compliance services, while MasterCard will provide payment network access to support the daily consumption of participating merchants. Orbi customers can access their digital assets through physical and virtual Mastercards, which also support cash withdrawals through Mastercard's domestic payment network in Mexico. In addition, Mexico Domestic Switch connects the program to the country's existing payment infrastructure.
stablecoin adoption boosts SoFi's entry into Mexican market
Mexico's huge remittance market provides business opportunities for companies developing digital payment services. Stable coins provide another way to transfer funds across borders and obtain digital assets linked to the US dollar. Therefore, SoFi's cooperation is mainly aimed at customers who want to use cryptocurrency for regular financial transactions.
According to Bitso data, in 2025, stablecoins accounted for 40% of cryptocurrency purchases in four Latin American markets. Bitcoin accounted for 18% of purchases in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia. This is the first time that stablecoins have surpassed Bitcoin in Bitso's regional purchase data.
SoFi also plans to support additional stablecoin payment services through its fintech platform. Its SoFiUSD stablecoin is part of the broader infrastructure that supports the cooperation. In addition, all parties aim to connect digital asset transactions with mature payment systems and cross-border capital flows.
Build technical advantages based on existing banking infrastructure
SoFi Tech Solutions relies on Galileo and Technisys experience to support its fintech operations in Latin America. Galileo has more than 30 years of payment processing experience, while Technisys provides core banking technology. Together, these two capabilities support digital banking, transaction management, loan services and payment processing.
