MTN Nigeria confirms network outages in some areas
Leading telecom operator MTN Nigeria has confirmed that certain areas in several key states, including Lagos, Oyo, Rivers State, Delta State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are currently experiencing network outages that affect voice and Internet services.
Late Thursday, the company issued a notice to subscribers on Platform X (formerly Twitter) through its official communications support account stating that customers in affected areas may experience temporary service interruptions. "We are facing network challenges in parts of Oyo, Lagos, Rivers, Federal Capital Territory and Delta States, so our services may be temporarily unavailable," the company said in an official statement.
MTN acknowledged that engineers were working to restore service as soon as possible, but did not specify when the problem would be resolved. In previous updates, subscribers in affected states reported difficulty making voice calls, sending text messages or accessing mobile data services. Although MTN did not disclose the exact cause of the outage or provide a specific timetable for a full recovery, the telecom operator assured users that the technical team was actively addressing the issue.
Network outages have multiple impacts on digital services
For users, these technical issues are more than simple service interruptions. For digital economy companies, online merchants, remote workers, and gig economy practitioners such as online ride-hailing and takeout delivery that rely on continuous mobile data for service delivery, network outages can lead to stagnant expected output, blocked order processing, and disrupted communication services.
Another significant loss is the impact of network outages on mobile data plans that are about to expire. Active hourly or daily Internet traffic packages, social media plans, and time-limited subscription services will continue to count down and eventually expire as the service becomes unavailable.
MTN FibreX broadband service is also affected
In a separate reply to subscribers under the above post, MTN Nigeria also confirmed that its broadband Internet service FibreX is also down in multiple locations. "We are experiencing a general service outage that affects the FibreX network and our support team is urgently addressing this," the company said in response to customer complaints.
Recently launched a bill compensation policy
This large-scale network outage occurred shortly after MTN launched a bill compensation policy to users who had poor experience between February and April 2026. Affected MTN customers began receiving text messages containing credit limits for phone calls on Sunday night, with varying compensation amounts. Screenshots circulated on social media show that customers receive compensation amounts as low as 20 naira and as high as 1,436 naira.
The text message read: "In accordance with the guidelines of the Communications Commission of Nigeria (NCC), your account has been charged with xxxx naira charges earlier today to make up for the service quality shortcomings identified in February, March and April 2026. Thank you for your understanding."
Although this bill compensation policy provides eligible subscribers with a remedy for poor network service, not all customers are eligible for this benefit. Under NCC rules, only subscribers located in local government jurisdictions affected by service failures and poor network quality are eligible for compensation.
