Bitcoin in the "Satoshi Era", which had been sleeping for 16 years, changed for the first time.

A batch of 100.02 bitcoins worth US$8.3 million was transferred for the first time on October 7. This group of bitcoins was first discovered in July 2010, the early stage of Bitcoin's development. The deal was suddenly activated after 16 years of silence, instantly becoming the focus of attention in the cryptocurrency community.

Historical transfers after a long period of dormancy

Based on a price of approximately US$83,000 per bitcoin, the total value of the transferred bitcoins is approximately US$8.3 million. When these coins were first dug up in 2010, the historical high of Bitcoin that year only brought their total value to about $29. The transfer marks one of the latest major flows of Bitcoin in the Satoshi-era. "Satoshi Nakamoto Era" refers to the Bitcoin period explored by Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous founder of the Bitcoin Network, during his active period.

The transaction was confirmed in Block 970,379 at 18:52 UTC. Funds were divided into two parts: 10 and 90.02, and transferred to two new addresses in modern format (bc1q). The handling fee for the transfer was only 1,467 satoshis, or approximately US$1.22, which is negligible compared to the US$8.3 million in assets moved.

On-chain data does not disclose the identity of the holder, and experts emphasize that transfers of funds between addresses do not necessarily mean a sale. As of Thursday, both new addresses were unused, and the coins had not been spent elsewhere on the chain.

Details of early mining activities

This batch of bitcoins was originally generated in two blocks at the end of July 2010: block 70,522 and block 70,748. The two mining operations were only two days apart, producing 50.02 and 50 bitcoins respectively. The two batches of coins were merged into the same transaction on July 30, 2010 and remained at the same address until this recent transfer.

The early days of Bitcoin were full of novelty and experimentation. In 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz famously exchanged 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas, which were worth about $41 at the time. Since then, Bitcoin mining rewards have been halved four times, with the most recent reduction in April 2024, reducing the rewards to 3.125 bitcoins per block. This means that the revenue from each new block is now only a fraction of what miners earned in early 2010.

Activity patterns of dormant wallets

On-chain records show that although the address has had other transactions in the past-including 100 sent in 2015, another 100 sent in December 2017, and 249 sent in March 2018-the specific 100.02 bitcoins transferred this week have remained static since 2010. Blockchain analytics company Galaxy confirmed that it was tracking individual coins rather than addresses, clarifying that these specific coins had never changed hands in 16 years.

Galaxy said: "We maintain a complete ledger of each UTXO and all historical movement records (approximately 1.7 terabytes). The address did have some activity in the past, but these specific coins have not moved since 2010. We track the coin itself."
