Avalanche founder Emin Gunn Sirer warns: Artificial intelligence may reveal hidden XRP Ledger vulnerabilities
Avalanche founder Emin Gün Sirer warns that artificial intelligence technology may expose undiscovered software weaknesses in XRP Ledger, exposing blockchain networks to attack risks. Developers at XRP Ledger resolved the security vulnerability with an emergency software update, and subsequently released the previously withheld source code and provided detailed technical explanations.
Vitalik Buterin and other blockchain researchers have raised concerns about cryptographic security, while Syrah emphasized that existing software flaws are an imminent threat.
Software security becomes a top priority
Syrah points out that attackers may exploit hidden code flaws before advances in artificial intelligence threaten existing cryptographic protections. His warning shows that software security has become an urgent concern for blockchain networks. In a post, Sierra argued that advanced artificial intelligence models may reveal loopholes that are ignored in regular software reviews. These flaws may affect blockchain applications, software libraries, and cryptocurrency wallets.
He cited Ripple as an example to challenge the assumption that "there are no undiscovered flaws in high-value blockchains." Such vulnerabilities are often referred to as "zero-day vulnerabilities" because developers have no fixes available to them when attackers discover or exploit them. Such attacks expose billions of dollars in money without cracking transaction cryptography. However, he did not provide evidence of AI-driven attacks on XRP Ledger or any specific significant vulnerability.
XRP Ledger security update draws attention to software risks
This warning follows the release of XRP Ledger emergency version 3.4.1 on September 25. This version fixes payment engine overflow vulnerabilities and introduces safeguards against incorrectly packaged batch transactions. Developers initially withheld source code when operators deployed updates. A disclosure document released October 9 details the two vulnerabilities and confirms that developers have released previously withheld source code.
Thereport explains that one of the payment engine flaws could create unauthorized XRPs through specially constructed transactions. Another issue involves batch transaction verification and may have potential consequences for online consensus under certain conditions. Neither disclosure attributed the vulnerability to the discovery of artificial intelligence, nor did it establish any link between the fixes and Sierra's warnings.
Broader AI security debate divides blockchain researchers
Syra's comments also followed warnings from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who focused on the impact of AI-assisted discovery on Geg-based cryptographic assumptions. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson questioned the predictions and whether mathematical evidence supported the proposed time frame. Ethereum researcher Justin Drake separately raised concerns about threats to future elliptic curve digital signature algorithms. Sierra acknowledged potential cryptographic risks while highlighting software flaws that attackers could use increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems to discover.
Thus, his remarks distinguish between potential future attacks on cryptography and vulnerabilities that already exist in blockchain software implementations.
