- Interphase
- COTI Global
COTI's Privacy Portal document describes a related COTI V2 process. Supported ERC-20 assets can be converted into private tokens, while balances and transferred amounts remain encrypted on the chain. Users decrypt their information locally through their wallet settings.
It should be noted that this document should not be interpreted as evidence that all Interphase or COTI Global features are fully available on all networks. But it does show the technical direction: The system is designed to process encrypted payment data, rather than disclosing balances and amounts in clear text.
COTI also stated that its compliance checks can be run on encrypted transaction data. If the model works as described, transfers can be screened without disclosing the amount or the parties involved. This is completely different from having no control system at all.
Private transfers may still leave identity traces
Encrypting data on the chain does not create complete financial anonymity. When payments are connected to identified exchange accounts, merchant profiles, or wallet addresses that have been publicly associated with their owners, the privacy of payments may be reduced.
We recently looked at the same boundary in another context, exploring whether Bitcoin could achieve greater payment privacy without changing its base layer. The conclusions are similar: concealing transaction details can improve confidentiality, but exchange records, public cash points, and independent service providers can still re-associate activities to specific identities.
This correlation can occur at several stages of the payment journey:
- Buy and sell cryptocurrencies through exchanges that implement KYC;
- Reuse addresses that have been associated with individuals or businesses;
- Send funds to merchants that maintain customer and invoice records;
- Transfer assets from private balances to a public blockchain environment; or
- Use services whose availability depends on local regulations or compliance requirements.
COTI's roadmap lists anti-leakage tools designed to warn users that private payments may be reconnected to known public identities when withdrawing or reusing addresses. Because this feature appears in the roadmap, it should be treated as a planned feature rather than a security guarantee that users can assume has been activated.
The real test comes at the checkout stage.
Private transfers are technically attractive, but payments are of practical value only when the rest of the transaction is working normally. Merchants need evidence that they have received payment, and customers may need receipts. Both parties need a path for refunds, dispute resolution, and accounting, and does not expose information unrelated to the purchase.
It is here that COTI's approach may be more relevant than standard privacy tools. A company that makes payments to suppliers may want to confirm that invoices have been settled without exposing its full treasury balance. Customers may want to prove payment without handing over their wallet history. Payment products must meet both needs.
This makes successful testing straightforward. COTI needs to demonstrate that private payments are easy to use, have a clear understanding of their limitations, and are useful in ordinary transactions, not just in product demonstrations.
