Key Points

Bank of America reported disappointing third-quarter results for 2026, with net income falling to $6.9 billion. A regulatory fine of $1.2 billion, along with weak revenue from investment banking and trading activities, had a significant impact on quarterly performance. As a result, investors reacted negatively, and Bank of America’s stock price fell by about 4% during pre-market trading.

The third-quarter financial results for 2026 did not meet Wall Street expectations.

According to the bank’s official financial report, net income decreased to $6.9 billion over the three months ending September 30, with earnings per share standing at $0.91. In contrast, net income in the same period of 2025 was $8.3 billion, with earnings per share at $1.04. After deducting regulatory and settlement costs, adjusted earnings per share were $1.08, slightly below analysts’ expectations of $1.10. Meanwhile, total revenue for the quarter was approximately $30 billion, lower than Wall Street’s forecast of $30.58 billion.

The main reason for the decline in profits was a $1.2 billion provision related to Bank of America’s failure to comply with anti-money laundering regulations. U.S. regulators noted that the bank had failed to report suspicious transactions worth over $5 billion as required.

Both investment banking and trading revenues declined this quarter.

In addition to the regulatory fines, Bank of America’s investment banking business also faced challenges this quarter. Due to recent geopolitical uncertainties, rising borrowing costs, and market fluctuations, mergers and acquisitions activities slowed down, resulting in a 11% decrease in investment banking fees, to $1.8 billion.

Sales and trading revenues also decreased by 5%, reaching $5.1 billion. This decline was mainly due to poor performance in fixed income, foreign exchange, and commodity trading.

However, the bank demonstrated some resilience in other areas. Thanks to increased loan issuance and a larger deposit base, net interest income grew by approximately 9% year-over-year, reaching $16 billion. The quality of assets remained relatively stable, with net write-offs amounting to $135 million, lower than the $141 million seen in the previous quarter.

After the financial results were released, stock prices fell

. On October 13th, Tuesday, Bank of America’s stock declined by 1.14% during regular trading hours, closing at around $53.96 per share. After the financial results were announced on Wednesday, selling pressure increased, with BAC stocks falling by about 4% during pre-market trading.

The decline in stock prices is likely due to investors’ concerns over weakened profitability, disappointing investment banking performance, and potential compliance costs. Since the beginning of 2026 until Tuesday’s close, the stock has fallen by approximately 1.9%. Currently, investors are closely monitoring whether strong net interest income can offset regulatory expenses and compensate for the weak performance in capital market activities during the fourth quarter of 2026.
