TLDR: Institutions and Layer-2 expansion gains momentum

Privacy tools and wallet infrastructure advancement

DeFi growth and ecosystem plans continue

Ethereum's activities accelerated in August, covering Layer-2 upgrades, institutional adoption and ecosystem development. BlackRock expanded its tokenization business on Ethereum, while Gnosis and Whitechin advanced the Layer-2 transformation. Privacy tools and wallet infrastructure are advancing through new applications, security features and post-quantum technology. DeFi growth continues, with Aave, Morpho and Uniswap reaching new deposit and transaction milestones.

Development activity for Ethereum accelerated throughout August, as builders in the ecosystem released new upgrades, launched new protocols, and expanded institutional integration. The Layer-2 network has improved its infrastructure, decentralized financial protocols have recorded new deposit milestones, and privacy applications have gained new impetus. These developments involve governance, tokenization, wallet security and on-chain games, covering the broader Ethereum ecosystem.

Institutions and Layer-2 expansion gains momentum

This month, Ethereum's Layer-2 ecosystem has undergone structural changes. GnosisDAO has approved a vote to migrate Gnosis Chain from a stand-alone Layer-1 network to a zero-knowledge proof-based Ethereum Layer-2 aggregation. This shift introduces synchronous composability, allowing applications on Gnosis and Ethereum to interact in a single transaction.

Institutional interest in Ethereum is also expanding. BlackRock launched its Select Treasury Based Liquidity Fund and deployed the tokenized share category on the Ethereum main network. The asset manager has also begun tokenized share categories for its 311 billion euro European money market fund series on the network.

Ethereum is constantly being delivered. Here are 35 items released, upgraded and announced by the Ethereum ecosystem in August.

Arbitrum activates the ArbOS Elara upgrade, bringing more sensitive transaction fees to Arbitrum One. The update also quadruples Stylus smart contract capacity and adds new features to chains built on the Arbitrum stack. In addition, Whitehain, which is connected to the WhiteBit exchange ecosystem, announced plans to transform from a stand-alone Layer-1 to an Ethereum Layer-2 built on OP Stack. The Ethereum client team also introduced the Platåberget test network to prepare for the Glamestead network upgrade.

Privacy tools and wallet infrastructure advancement

In August, privacy-focused development activities remained active in the Ethereum ecosystem. Aztec Network has released an Alpha v5 protocol upgrade that reduces the certification time for private transactions. This release also brings an initial set of privacy-protection apps. Privacy Boost has launched a new front-end app that allows users to send private transfers directly from a connected wallet. In addition, Privacy Pools has launched on-chain salary support that allows employers to pay regular wages while maintaining the privacy of salary amounts and payee addresses.

Wallet security has also been improved with the new version. MetaMask has launched Agent Wallet, an agent tool with spending limits, whitelists, and configurable risk profiles. Freedom Factory has opened pre-sales for PQ1, an offline hardware wallet that uses post-quantum cryptography to sign transactions through an Ethereum smart account. Privacy wallet Cloaked reported that during its first 90 days of operation, deposits reached $650,000 and transaction volume reached $1 million. Web3Privacy also released a 2026 Ethereum Privacy Ecosystem Mapping update, documenting the network's growing landscape of privacy tools.

DeFi growth and ecosystem plans continue

This month, decentralized financial activity on Ethereum has continued to expand. Aave v4 has more than $525 million in deposits on the Ethereum main network. Morpho reported that in less than two months after Robinhood Chain was launched, total deposits exceeded US$880 million, while deposits on Base reached US$5.75 billion. Uniswap's stock token trading volume on Robinhood Chain exceeds US$1 billion, with total trading volume exceeding US$20 billion since the platform's launch in July. The exchange has also introduced the v4 license pool, a hook standard that allows white-listed exchanges of regulated assets while maintaining the permissionless nature of the underlying protocol.

Coinbase has launched tokenized shares on Base for non-U.S. users, supported one-on-one by regulated custodians and kept in self-custodial wallets. Base has also opened up applications for its Base Batches 004 accelerator program, supporting ten early teams built on the web. Ether.fi has expanded its crypto digital banking services to provide tokenized stocks and portfolio backed loans facilitated through Aave. The Ethereum Foundation has also partnered with zkSecurity and EigenLabs to launch an automated research challenge focusing on post-quantum security, placing the security issues of machine verification on a public ranking for open contributions.
