Zcash community approves $8.39 million in retrospective funding, covering security research and protocol development

Based on OpenZcash's token holder-led funding allocation results in the third quarter of 2026, Zcash ($ZEC) holders have approved a total of $8.39 million in retrospective funding. The funds will be used to support security research, protocol development and broader ecosystem construction efforts.

The security crisis drives money to

The largest portion of the approved funds stems directly from a major security incident earlier this year. On May 29, 2026, security researcher Taylor Hornby used an artificial intelligence-assisted audit to discover a key integrity vulnerability in the Zcash Orchard hidden pool circuitry. The vulnerability affects Orchard's zero-knowledge proof circuit; if maliciously exploited, an attacker could forge ZECs in a hidden pool without leaving any identifiable on-chain records.

Zcash publicly disclosed this serious problem on June 4, 2026, and repaired the circuit through emergency network upgrade NU6.2 on June 3 of the same year. The voting results showed that both bounty proposals for Hornby were approved: one covering the $750,000 vulnerability bounty he applied for, and the other was a $750,000 additional reward nominated by the community, totaling $1.5 million. Grantees still need to complete the identification verification (KYC) and fund disbursement process.

Traceability model rewards completed work

In the third quarter of 2026, the "Tokenholder-led retrospective funding" round funded a total of 17 of the 37 proposals, accounting for 93.1% of the total application amount of US$9.01 million. The project is structured to pay for work delivered ex post facto rather than in advance. Retroactive funding is specifically used to support work that has been completed and publicly verifiable.

Other funded security efforts include: $425,000 to fix five key Zebra consensus divergence vulnerabilities;$400,000 to deal with a temporary detectable infinite casting and selling vulnerability; and a $150,000 Zebra vulnerability bounty.

This vote attracted a large number of Zcash supplies, of which the largest single vote was approximately 2.18 million ZECs, accounting for 10.4% of the maximum Zcash supply of 21 million. This figure shows a significant increase compared to the participation of approximately 500,608 ZECs in the first quarter.
