Polymarket officially launches perpetual contract trading to expand its leveraged market landscape

Prediction-market platform Polymarket has launched perpetual contract trading services to the public, expanding its business scope to cover leveraged trading markets covering cryptocurrencies, stocks, stock indexes and commodities. Starting from September 3, Polymarket Perps has been officially launched, supporting contracts with a maximum leverage of 20 times. Traders can establish long or short positions without an expiration date, while ensuring that the contract price is consistent with the underlying reference market through a regular funding rate payment mechanism.

Bitcoin, stocks and commodities join the Polymarket product line

The first trading instruments to be launched include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and HYPE, as well as traditional market exposures such as the S & P 500, Nasdaq 100, gold, silver and West Texas Intermediate (WTI). In addition, individual stock perpetual contracts have also been opened, including in markets related to companies such as Tesla and Nvidia.

Currently, the S & P 500 index contracts support leverage of up to 20 times and offer segregated margin or all-position margin models. The widespread use of this product uses marker prices and oracle prices to calculate positions, capital rates and equalization mechanisms.

This public rollover was conducted after the beta version of Perps was launched to some users in May this year. Testing at the time introduced continuous long and short trading capabilities that worked in parallel with Polymarket's existing event contracts, and access was subsequently gradually expanded to a wider range of international platforms.

Unlike forecast markets, which are settled around the outcome of specific events, perpetual contracts track the price of the underlying asset and positions can remain held as long as traders maintain sufficient margin. However, higher leverage increases potential gains while also increasing the risk of being forced out.

pUSD as transaction collateral on the Polygon network

Perps uses pUSD as transaction collateral, a unified settlement token introduced by Polymarket earlier this year. pUSD is an ERC-20 token deployed on the Polygon network, fully supported by the USDC on a 1:1 ratio, and enforces this endorsement relationship through a smart contract structure.

Polymarket's core contracts are deployed on the Polygon network, which extends the same blockchain infrastructure originally used to predict markets into leveraged transactions.

This expansion enriches the platform's financial markets product portfolio without replacing its existing event contracts business. Users can freely switch between markets that price future events and perpetual contracts that express directional views on assets such as BTC, ETH, gold or the S & P 500 on the same platform.

International platforms remain independent of U.S.

Perps belongs to Polymarket's international platform, not Polymarket US, an independent designated contract market regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This international site remains unavailable in the United States and multiple other restricted jurisdictions. Previously, when Perps entered the testing phase, Polymarket denied claims that the platform fully implemented mandatory KYC (Know Your Customer), but continued to impose geographical restrictions and sanctions controls on restricted areas.

Polymarket's open perpetual contract market was fully launched on September 4 and currently has active contracts in the cryptocurrency, stocks, indices and commodities sectors, supporting leverage of up to 20 times in some markets.
