The key is that the trustee uses its own signing key, so the principal's master key never leaves the cold storage environment. In fact, the trustee can submit transactions "as if" they were the principal, but only within the allowed set of rights. This design limits the risk: even if the trustee's key is stolen, the master key remains secure, exposing only those limited privileges.

In short, publishers can grant each role the exact rights it needs and revoke them immediately when needed. For security reasons, not all functions can be delegated. XRPL ensures that trustees cannot enhance their own privileges. The principal retains ultimate control: it chooses which fine-grained permissions to grant and can revoke those permissions at any time. The XRPL document also emphasizes that this model allows the master key to remain offline to ensure security, while daily tasks run on the delegated key.

Interestingly, RippleX engineer Mayukha Vadari points out that delegation can even help solve the use case of "black-hole" publisher accounts: before the publisher goes offline, it can delegate a few remaining tasks, such as account domain names updates, to trusted addresses, retaining limited access after lockdown. This upgrade is accompanied by broader development and strengthens XRP Ledger's position in the tokenization field. A recent report from Token Terminal found that XRPL recorded the largest year-to-date increase in the market value of tokenized goods in the tracking chain, with an increase of approximately $2.2 billion as of October 6, 2026, compared with approximately $1.6 billion for Ethereum.

This ledger has also attracted attention in regulated markets. In October, Ripple teamed up with Brazil's central securities depository, CSD BR, to mirror shares of BTG Pactual funds on XRP Ledger. This setting enables near-real-time on-chain audits, while CSD BR retains official records and participant control.
