On October 9, USDT issuer Tether carried out a blacklist operation on THORChain's four USDT vaults on the TRON blockchain, frozen approximately 1.45 million USDTs, and suspended swap transactions on the TRON chain. However, about three hours later, the addresses were removed from the blacklist, the fund balance remained intact, and the transaction resumed.
THORChain co-founder Chad Barraford issued a statement on platform X saying the move was "unprecedented in our industry." The incident has reignited a long-standing central question in the decentralized finance world: How real is the "permissionless" nature of an agreement when the most widely used stablecoins are controlled by a single issuer?
History of the freezing event
This blacklist operation was performed through Tether's `addBlackList` function in the TRC-20 contract on the TRON network, resulting in the inability of the affected treasury to send USDTs. In response, THORChain suspended transactions on the TRON chain, transaction signatures and related operations by liquidity providers. About three hours later, the addresses were removed from the blacklist and the balance was unaffected, and the agreement subsequently restored swaps on the TRON chain. As of now, Tether has not publicly explained the reasons for these two steps.

此外，此次冻结还发生在一宗更广泛的硬件钱包盗窃调查背景下。Tether一直在冻结与东南亚经销商CryptoBilis销售的受损Ledger设备报告损失相关的地址。THORChain的金库似乎是在这一更广泛的批量冻结行动中被牵连，但目前尚未建立确凿的联系。
悬而未决的问题
Barraford表示，THORChain正在积极尝试与Tether进行沟通，但对于实施黑名单及其后续撤销的原因，Tether仍未给出解释。这种缺乏透明度的情况本身就是一个教训：主要路由上的协议可以在毫无通知的情况下暂停运行，而用户唯一的即时应对措施便是公开声明此事。
至于这次冻结究竟是误操作、与更大规模清查行动相关的预防措施，还是其他原因，目前仍无定论。
