The main reason for this gap is quite direct: Wealthy households own far more financial assets than others. The middle class is disappearing. According to the Federal Reserve, the top 1% of Americans now control one-third of the country's net assets. Since 2020, the net assets of the top 1% have increased by US$30 trillion, while the net value of the bottom 50% is only US$4.3 trillion.

Kobeissi's research shows that the top 0.1% invest nearly 60% of their assets in stocks and mutual funds. The next 9.9% accounted for approximately 38% of these investments. For the bottom 50%, this proportion is only about 4%.

This difference becomes extremely important when stocks, real estate, precious metals and other assets rise rapidly. Households that already own large amounts of assets see their net worth increase, while people who rely mainly on wages and cash savings can hardly benefit from it. At the same time, they still need to cope with rising prices for housing, food, transportation and other basic expenses.

Inflation makes the gap more pronounced

Kobeissi also pointed to a loss of purchasing power since 2020. It is estimated that the purchasing power of the dollar fell by about 23% during this period. This means that while a nominal return of 20% or 30% on an investment over a few years may seem impressive, its practical significance is greatly reduced once inflation is factored in.

It is here that asset ownership becomes particularly important. If cash depreciates due to inflation and scarce or productive assets rise in nominal terms, those who already own those assets are in a better position to preserve wealth. Even if wages rise, those who do not own these assets may fall further behind. Kobeissi describes this as one of the central forces behind the widening wealth gap.

There are certainly other reasons, including housing costs, wage growth, tax policies, education, debt, productivity and differences in access to investment markets. Inflation alone cannot explain the entire gap, but it clearly amplifies the advantages of owning assets.

Why this is good for Bitcoin

This is the time when Bitcoin comes into play. Bitcoin is designed based on a fixed money supply. Only 21 million BTC will always exist, making it fundamentally different from currencies whose supply expands over time. This scarcity is one reason why investors often compare Bitcoin to gold.

Demand for scarce assets may continue to grow if more and more people are worried about long-term currency devaluation, persistent inflation and difficulty maintaining purchasing power through cash alone. Bitcoin is part of this discussion.

The emergence of spot Bitcoin ETFs has also made it easier for traditional investors to hold BTC through familiar brokerage and retirement structures. This removes one of the main obstacles that had previously prevented many investors from staying away from the crypto market.

The wealth gap itself does not guarantee a rise in Bitcoin prices, but the economic forces behind it may support it. If households conclude that simply holding cash will cause them to fall behind and asset prices continue to rise, more capital may eventually seek to allocate stocks, gold, bitcoin and other assets with limited supply or long-term appreciation potential.

Cryptocurrencies may become part of asset ownership discussions

From another perspective, this may also have a significant impact in the long term. Historically, the entry barrier to the crypto market has been much lower than for many traditional asset classes. People don't need enough capital to buy real estate or enter the private equity market to start owning Bitcoin. Fractional BTC can be purchased with relatively small amounts of money.

This does not mean that cryptocurrencies are not risky. Bitcoin remains volatile, and most altcoins are riskier. If people view cryptocurrency as a guarantee solution to inflation or inequality, they could lose huge amounts of money. However, the ability to access scarce digital assets with a small amount of capital makes cryptocurrencies stand out among many traditional ways of storing wealth.

This may become relevant if the younger generation feels housing, stocks and other assets become unaffordable.

Greater Bitcoin Logic

The Kobeissi LetterThe research ultimately highlights a broader economic reality. The past few years have strongly rewarded those who already have assets. At the same time, households with most wealth in the form of cash or wages face rising costs of living and declining purchasing power.

If this trend continues, the incentive to own assets rather than fully hold cash will increase. Bitcoin is unlikely to solve wealth inequality in the United States alone. But its fixed supply, global accessibility and growing presence in the global financial system mean it could become one of the assets that people will turn to as they try to fend off the same forces that have caused the current gap.

This is where reading multiple cases becomes interesting.
