Administrators began receiving alerts around 4 p.m. on November 25 because hundreds of accounts triggered password resets, the indictment wrote. All other domain administrator accounts no longer exist. Forty-four minutes later, employees received an email titled "Your network has been penetrated" claiming that the backup had been deleted. If 20 bitcoins are not received by December 2, 40 servers will be shut down for 10 days a day. As of Wednesday, bitcoin trading prices were close to $83,000, and the value of 20 bitcoins was about $1.7 million, well more than double the 2023 requirement.
Court documents show that on November 22, Renne searched the account on his hidden device for ways to reset domain user passwords, delete domain accounts, and clear Windows logs. A week ago, his company laptop ran a similar search, including how to turn off the computer remotely from the command line.
The case was investigated by the FBI's Newark office, led by Stefanie Roddy, with assistance from Kansas City. Rehn was arrested in August 2024 and released after a first court hearing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Taj Moore prosecuted the case on behalf of the Cybercrime Unit.
Previously, similar cases have also attracted attention. For example, SaaS company Brightly Software was attacked by one of its contractors, demanding $2.5 million. In March, Cameron Curry, a 27-year-old data analyst from North Carolina, was sentenced to two years in prison for his role in the incident. In addition, Adam Iza was sentenced to six and a half years in prison by a federal court in California on October 5 for his involvement in plans to steal more than $37 million from Meta. It was also reported that Armenian Karen Serobovich Vardanyan pleaded guilty in the United States in July to suspected Ripon ransomware activity, which made profits by charging more than $15 million in bitcoins from U.S. companies, including a Michigan company paying 200 bitcoins.
