Danaher announced the construction of its first AI-driven autonomous laboratory and plans to achieve full operation by early 2027.

Danaher Corporation recently announced that it will build its first autonomous laboratory driven by artificial intelligence. The laboratory aims to design, build and test customized antibodies with minimal human intervention and plans to reach full operational capabilities by early 2027.

As an important instrument and reagent supplier to drug developers and academic researchers, Danaher said that the establishment of the new laboratory is aimed at grasping industry expectations: by automating the most time-consuming aspects of early research and development, the company brings significant commercial competitive advantages.

Integrate AI, robots and group tools to build a closed-loop workflow

The laboratory will be established based on Abcam, a subsidiary of Danaher, integrating artificial intelligence, robotics and multiple tools within the group to form a unified workflow. The system will use AI to design new affinity reagents (including antibodies), and robots will then be responsible for building and testing candidate molecules. According to Danaher's announcement, test results will be fed back into the model, making each round of new designs better than the previous round. The company defines this process as a continuous "design-manufacture-test-learn" cycle.

The five core technologies originate from Danaher's five business units, including Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, Integrated DNA Technologies and Molecular Devices. According to Quartz, the robot's automation and equipment scheduling functions are achieved through cooperation with Automata, which Danaher invested in in January 2026.

Eight-fold increase in efficiency and ten-fold increase in production capacity

According to a press release issued by the company, the laboratory is expected to increase the discovery speed of affinity reagents by as much as eight times, and after the scale is expanded, the annual reagent production will be increased from the current dozens to hundreds, an increase of nearly tenfold.

JC Gutierrez-Ramos, senior vice president and chief scientific officer of Danaher, said that the laboratory represents a new paradigm for scientific research, achieving innovation in scientific research models by combining AI and automation technologies with human expertise in a continuous cycle. He emphasized that scientists will still play a leading role in key decisions, while autonomous platforms will handle repetitive experimental work.

Danaher CEO Julie Sawyer Montgomery described the project as an early step into the future rather than a fully fledged system. She pointed out that the project is expected to usher in a new era in which AI, automation and intelligent systems will greatly accelerate the process from scientific discovery to practical application.

Single-point breakthrough, layout of intelligent instrument fleet

The Abcam facility is seen as the first step in Danaher's long-term strategy, and the company plans to gradually build a so-called "smart instrument fleet." These devices are designed to be easier to control through software, generate data that can be directly used for AI analysis, and run intelligent agent systems with "expert level" capabilities.

The

announcement pointed out that existing instruments may be connected to more autonomous laboratories in the future, allowing the same self-optimized cycle to run in parallel in different research projects, thereby further amplifying the synergy effect.

The market responded positively, with analysts raising their target price

Investors responded positively to the news. Danaher shares rose about 2% in pre-market trading on Wednesday, according to Yahoo Finance. Ahead of the announcement, Barclays analyst Luke Sergott had raised Danaher's price target to $255 from $230, while maintaining an "overmatched" rating on the stock.

As of press time, Danaher's share price was trading at around $219.
