Federal Reserve's September meeting minutes: Most officials believe it may be appropriate to raise interest rates again before the end of the year.
The Federal Reserve has released the minutes of its September Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. The minutes showed that most Fed officials believed it might be appropriate to raise interest rates again before the end of 2026.
According to the minutes, all members present at the meeting supported a 25 basis point increase in the policy interest rate in September. Most participants also believe another rate hike may be needed before the end of the year.
Inflation risks and labor market conditions
Although Fed officials have different views on the reasons for supporting interest rate hikes, inflation risks are one of the key topics at this meeting. Participants generally pointed out that inflation risks are tilted upwards, and some members said that these risks have increased further in the near future.
Many Fed officials assess that the current policy interest rate either has no restrictive effect on the economy or only plays a limited restrictive effect. Officials generally stressed that inflation remains high and the labor market is close to full employment.
The artificial intelligence investment boom attracts attention
The minutes also highlighted the assessment of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) investment. While some officials noted that investment in AI infrastructure continued to exceed expectations, they warned that the investment boom could cause aggregate demand to exceed the economy's supply capacity, exacerbating inflationary pressures.
In addition, despite the recent rise in long-term U.S. Treasury yields, financial conditions continue to support economic growth. Although the economic outlook forecast by Fed staff is stronger than at the July meeting, some participants assess that advances in artificial intelligence may cause aggregate demand to exceed supply in the medium term, putting upward pressure on inflation. Almost all participants believe that inflation risks are tilted upwards, while risks in the labor market are seen as generally balanced.
Meeting Consensus Summary
According to the minutes, all 19 participating members unanimously supported the decision to raise interest rates in September. Rapidly expanding artificial intelligence investment is also one of the prominent topics at this meeting. Some officials pointed out that the scale of AI infrastructure investment continues to exceed market expectations.
