The U.S. government once again seized cryptocurrencies on a large scale, and more than 12,000 bitcoins were transferred to the Coinbase Prime Wallet

Hours after the U.S. government transferred a large amount of bitcoins to the Coinbase Prime escrow account, it completed another major transaction involving seized cryptocurrencies. Blockchain data showed that more than 12,267 bitcoins (BTC) were transferred from a wallet address linked to crypto-assets seized by the U.S. government on Wednesday, worth more than $1 billion at press time prices. The move comes just hours after the government previously transferred approximately $770 million worth of bitcoin to Coinbase Prime wallet.

Fund traceability and background

Arkham Research linked the bitcoin transfer to a fund recovery operation in the 2016 Bitfinex hack. In this case, hackers stole 119,756 bitcoins. As of press time, the identity of the owner of the recipient's wallet address is not clear.

Cointelegraph contacted the U.S. Marshals Service and the Department of Justice to seek comment on the transfer of Coinbase Prime, but no immediate response was received as of press time.

Policy developments and future prospects

It is estimated that as of 2026, the number of bitcoins held by the U.S. government will reach 328,372. These assets mainly come from seizures in criminal investigations. In March 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish strategic reserves of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, but the Legislature is still working to turn the executive order into formal law.
